First off, this game should of been called War Hammer 40,000 Elevators because for alot of the time all you do is take elevators.
Space Marine is a good over the shoulder/3rd person shooter with kick ass melee attacks. Shooting & slashing through hundreds of Orks is fun for a while. That is, until you get overrun & have Orks taking cheapshots from far away. I was not a fan of the health regen & the way you had to get it. One thing that did bother me was even though I had 2 other Marines with me for the majority of the game they were utterly useless. Why put guys in the game if they just stand aside when it all goes down?
There were a good number of great weapons. All the hand to hand weapons were worth their weight in gold. The cutscenes were nicely tone. The boss fights were pretty fun, of course you had to get through a ton of enemies to get to the bosses though. The final boss was a pain in the ass to get to, you had to fight an army first - Killing him was a blast though. |

I'm not really into Warhammer so I didn't get any extra benefit from that genre. What I saw and played for about 90 minutes was a bad ripoff of Gears of War. I was done with it in less than 2 hours of play time, bored....
Did not finish, and did not try multiplayer (if it has it? Didn't even look). |

One half TPS, one half Beat-Em-Up... and all bloody. The only thing that keeps this from being 5's across the board for me were bland-ish levels and environments; but the multiplayer is decent and F2P except for a level cap without the code, as with other THQ games. I'm not familiar with the Warhammer universe but it's very easy to pick up on the story.
Gameplay is like a blend of Vanquish and Gears of War; enemies will come from all directions and require both ranged and melee attacks in rapid succession to survive. Even normal difficulty presents a good challenge. Weaponry is interesting and upgrades will be discovered at regular intervals as the game progresses. The most interesting part of the gameplay is the method required to regain health: it's not through medkit pickups or healing stations... instead, you'll have to perform a stun on an enemy, then execute them to regenerate your life bar. It's not realistic but it sets the gameplay apart from many similar titles. |
