Hey everyone,
I wanted to put together an official Goozex Top 100 Games as selected by our members. I know there are few threads with similar themes, and this can be considered the official Goozex list. We're looking for games that have been rated and reviewed by you that are worthy of being in our Goozex Top 100 list. This list should include only games you have played and loved.
I'll keep this top post updated with all the games that are entered, and here is how to participate:
1. Rate and review your own game that you feel belongs on this list and then share it on a post on this thread
2. Copy and paste another member's review that you think does a worthy job of rating a Top 100 game.
3. You are allowed to dispute another person's selection and as long as there are more Yea's than Nay's for any given game then it can stay.
4. No matter what game is selected there must be one member's review tied to it (see first 10 below)
5. Flaming or trolling posts will be deleted!
Note: there is no ranking of the top 100. In other words, there is no #1, #20, or #99 ranked game -- all are equal on the list. All games must be ones that can be traded on Goozex (they don't necessarily have to have any supply or demand).
We'll be going through game ratings to include our own picks like the ones below. We'll be giving away point prizes to reviews selected by the team on a weekly basis.
Enjoy putting this together!
Goozex Top 100 List -- sssshhhh it's growing
Let the awesome selections and reviews begin!
Remember, provide helpful and pleasent criticism on people choices, do not berate someone or namecall. Enjoy and if you have any questions, feel free to contact blackcoyote or myself!
Bioshock
legendwait4it - August 26, 2008
Wow!!! Bioshock is one of the most innovative and unique games I have played in years. It is totally up there with Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Super Mario 64. This is the must-play game of the year on the 360 (sorry Halo 3 fans). This is no First-Person shooter---this is a First-Person Adventure. You explore the spooky world of Rapture, a undersea dystopia. 5 Stars
Call of Duty 4
rayfasa - August 27, 2008
The premier FPS to date. Multiplayer absolutely Rocks. Campaign ain't too shabby either. Too much good stuff to list, just try it, you won't be disappointed.
Civilization IV
darkbase - May 30, 2008
I've been playing Age of Empires since I was 12, and I never knew what an RTS game was. Years later, I've ditched AOE after discovering the Civilization franchise and have never looked back. This is a complex, addictive, incredibly lengthy, satisfying game. IV makes games run much sorter and requires a lot less micromanagement, and apparently "Civ: Revolutions" is pushing that even further.
Super Mario Galaxy
djpaetkau - August 18, 2008
By far the best graphics I've seen on the Wii, and I've never seen it drop a frame either! This is the Mario game we've been waiting for since Super Mario 64, Super Mario World, or even just the original Mario Bros. Cutscenes can be annoying that they can't be skipped, and it takes a couple levels to get used to the control scheme, but once you're in, you'll love it!
X-Com: UFO Defense
geomoose - November 09, 2007
Turn based strategy game that has yet to be bested after all these years. Phenomenal gameplay that blends strategy, action and research together while emotionally attaching the gamer to the ingame characters. Plus the game has a big rotating globe!
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic
Shadin - July 02, 2008
There's more Star Wars in this game than all three of the new trilogy put together. Seriously, the story is fantastic and feels much more original-trilogy awesome than anything else out there. The characters are great, gameplay mechanics are well done, and the graphics/sounds are impressive. The only thing BioWare did wrong was let Obsidian make the sequel.
Soul Calibur
LameAssTheMity - May 20, 2008
THE best fighting game in the history of the world.
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Catastrophic - July 27, 2008
Amazingly fun, surprisingly addicting. This game is one of the best I've played recently. The graphics, while not realistic, are amazing. The colors are vibrant, everything looks great. There are lots of weapons, gadgets and devices to keep you busy and I got completely addicted to upgrading my weapons stats and maxing out their level. Levels are big and open enough for you to explore and find optional items, it's not a linear game which helps it immesnly. Any PS3 owner should give this a try.
Psychonauts
MaggithaMay - February 14, 2008
Easily the best game I've ever played. Good characters, story, and humor. The money systyem is so tedious though, so it's hard to get past a certain point without using a cheat to get money.
Loved it!
Mario Kart DS
necrozen - March 09, 2008
Probably the best cart-style racer ever made, beating Double Dash by a nose. Great selection of tracks, smart AI, challenging, awesome vehicles, nice graphics, good physics, just an overall fun time and that's just the single player! In online wifi multi-player (or local, if you're around friends with DSs) you have a portable racing game that never gets old because there's always someone out there who wants to race you.
This is a DS essential, no doubt about it.
I'll start it off with one of my favorite games: Portal.
Pros:
It's extremely innovative with it's portal-jumping technology and creative puzzles but this game really shines with it's narrative. There is only one voice actor who plays, at first, a typical, monotonical (word?), computer who talks to you through an intercom system. As you progress through the game, you start to see bits of the story and the computer (Glados) gets more and more aggressive.
A memorable experience with an even more memorable story. A must-buy!
EDIT: Tried to find some faults to keep this review fair.
Cons:
Portal is a bit short. Though there are acheivements, most of them are for the challenges (timed, number of portals used, steps taken) for the different levels. While fun, they aren't really what makes the game great.
There is very little replayability besides going through the levels and doing those challenges.
I think user meschnitzel sums it up:
This was a throw-back to greatness in gaming. You can sit down and beat this game in a couple of hours (3-5 on a first time run.) All the while you are emotionaly connected to it. You learn to love the characters, all 2 of them, and really feel as though you have accomplished something on your journey. If you love gaming you owe it to yourself to play this game.
How It Works + The FAQ x Help Guide = edumacation. Epic Fail.

Review:I don't know how many times I played this game when it first came out. It was the sole reason I bought my first Playstation system and I have loved this game since day 1..even now I go back and play it simply because the storyline is so incredible, the gameplay is my favorite of any RPG out there..and everything about this game just screams "GREATEST GAME EVER MADE...PERIOD!" If you don't own it..good luck finding it. But I would easily spend my lifesavings on this if i didn't already own it.
Talk about passion for a game!
Here is a review of a game I absolutely loved and have praised repeatedly in the forums:
Shenmue (Dreamcast)
Below is a member review that sums up the game, but I wanted to add a couple of things. Shenmue was one of the few games that felt epic to me. The story was woven with great care and builds suspense that grabs you and keeps you playing. The ending leaves you wanting the sequel right then and there.
Gameplay: 5

Rez by madfigs
The storyline is pretty simple - you're a computer haxx0r trying to debug a highly advanced AI, so you must travel past its security systems to reach the programming core. The gameplay is a sort of 1st/3rd person scrolling shooter, with your avatar floating stationary at the bottom of the screen. You control a targeting reticule, which you can use to pick off enemies one-by-one or hold down the fire button to lock-on up to 8 targets, which will be destroyed in sequence when you let go.
If you wipe out certain sequences of enemies, you can collect an overdrive powerup which will wipe out all enemies on the screen. You can also find health bonus which make your avatar evolve into different forms, allowing you to take more hits (and changing the style of your attacks). My favorite form is the guy who sits serenely in the lotus position while all kinds of crazy stuff goes flying all around him.
What really makes Rez stand out is the insane combination of graphics and soundtrack. Each level has a different techo/trance track, and every time you blow up a bad guy they make a different noise depending on their type and how many you kill in sequence. The music is very catchy, in fact I've had the song from the first level on the top of my default iPod playlist for quite a while now.
It's hard to tell how cool the graphics are from a static screenshot. They're mostly based on wireframe and angular polygons, but there are some parts that are more detailed. The gameplay in the final stage is interspersed with the strange philosophical ruminations about life and humanity that you often see in Japanese games, but the transitions between areas are suddenly done in a new animation style, which switches to the normal wireframe model once you're back in control.
The overall experience is totally hypnotic, and unlike most games my thumbs tend to get sore before I get bored with playing. It's even fun to just watch someone else play. There are also a whole bunch of unlockable modes with different levels, color schemes, characters, etc, so the replayability is good as well.
I see this game is trading for a high point value, which makes sense because it's really great. I actually found my copy at Circuit City several years after it came out, which was lucky since it did pretty poorly at retail. Sorry I'm not trading my copy, but good luck to anyone who's looking!
Another person's review that I think is good:
Shadow of the Colossus by TiE23
One of my most loved games of all time, and favorite PS2 game. I got into the PS2 scene very late in August 2007. And I must say that only knowing very little about the game it was the most amazing surprise I've ever received. The game is just a sight to behold, the scale and epicness of the landscape and colossi are something to be experienced. It is a modern classic in every sense. This is one of the few games you must experience before you die. Buy it if you must! You must play this game!
Dragon Quest VIII - PS2 - The classic turn-based JRPG and the best of the DQ series. Excellent character graphics, a wonderful and funny story, and the most balanced turn-based gameplay I ever have been involved with. The game stays true to its roots while still having amazing depth with specail moves and the sensational alchemy system. DQ8 gets bonus points for being laugh out loud funny quite often. Not to mention the best English voice acting in a JRPG EVAR!
user jqtaxpayer says it well:
Among the best RPGs on the Playstation 2 console, no fan of classic turn-based RPGs should miss this game. Smooth animation, great orchestral score, good voice acting, plentiful sidequests and, overall, great gameplay will ensure that you enjoy every minute of the dozens of hours it will take to complete this game. A great value at its current price of 250 points.
One of my favorites: No One Lives Forever
Here are a few ...
Planescape: Torment (PC)
Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn (PC)
I would also like to 'second' No One Lives Forever (PC) with my own review:
And return to Geomoose for the sequel, No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy In HARM's Way:

Holy crap my review was used! (Civ IV) Wish I could clean it up a bit though, it goes on to mention the "purposed" features in a later game in the series.

Hey, that's me! Awesome!
Glad to see Civ IV is on there... probably my favorite game, and I've been doing this since 19[garbled transmission].
