Or at least that's what this person would have you believe
Man, I was just about to post about this... you beat me to the punch.

Well played... well played. :)
Wow. I can't really find the words...
It never ceases to amaze me how certain folks react to games (and topics) like Spore. I totally understand that they may not want their kids subjected to the "incorrect" theory of evolution, but by the same token they shouldn't expect everyone to want their kids to learn about Creationism, either.
Part of believing that you're right is understanding that other people are allowed to think you're wrong.
Robstein:Part of believing that you're right is understanding that other people are allowed to think you're wrong.
You'd like to think so ... but:
Part of being a fundamentalist Christian means *knowing* you're right ... and praying others realize that they are wrong before they head straight to hell. And believing that God and Faith belong in the decision-making of our governments, but that other countries who have religious influencing their politics are dangerous ...
It is sad that people will go to these lengths ... but that is there choice and unlike them, I support 100% their right to have that site and say what they think and feel about the silly game and Will Wright.
I just think that EA is the devil because of the DRM

How It Works + The FAQ x Help Guide = edumacation. Epic Fail.

I support their right to have the site as well, I just think they're being very, VERY hypocritical.
EDIT: Besides, it's also my right to call someone on stupidity.
I am trying to figure out on what legal grounds she would challenge the sale of that game.

I didn't realize you actually needed ground to file a lawsuit anymore.
:o)
Check out my travel blog (I'm in New Zealand currently) - www.lakerr.com
The saddest thing about that blog is I can't tell whether or not it's a joke. Canadians may have more trouble getting games in the mail, but at least you don't have to put up with this kind of thing as much.
I don't know about you, but if I was trying to bring the largest game company to its knees through the legal system, I'd want to have a shot at it with some relevant law.
I wrote about the whole thing myself.
Edit: Madfigs, I am leaning to authentic myself having dealt with such individuals countless times in the past (I specialized in the development and influence of Darwinian evolutionary theory for my undergrad degree, so I've been in a lot of battles about it over the years).
*sigh*
On the subject of her concern:
The story of evolution reminds me of another story: Galileo and heliocentrism (the theory that the sun is the center of the solar system). Galileo believed that heliocentrism was not fatal to his faith, but the church considered it heresy. It is now accepted that the sun IS the center of the solar system. Did that destory the church? Absolutely not.
Does evolution necessarily preclude creation? Some argue yes; others argue no. Is evolution a factual, provable, existing process? Most would argue yes. Does that mean that that was the origin of life? Well, that can be another arguement altogether.
On the subject of whether she has the right to stop Spore's sales:
What does she think she is doing? It's fiction... a video game. Next, will she seek the banning of books containing references to magic? How about movies? Next, lets ban curse words in public places. After that, words like Buddha, chi, yang. Then lets start censoring theology that doesn't correlate to her theories exactly. Where does this stop? How about a little capitalist vote: don't want to support it? Then Don't Buy.
Here's where I'm going to risk a little:
I have a son. I choose to teach him (when he gets a little older) multiple theories of origination as a philosophical/metaphysical subject. I will teach him about the process of evolution as a biological subject. I will teach him our familiy's faith as a personal subject. Other religions' principles will be taught in religious studies. If my church has a problem with that, well, respectfully, too bad. Just because they may not have a grasp on how a person can know about all that at once, but sill have faith in God, does not relieve me of the responsibility, as a person of good conscience, to teach my children a well rounded truth as best as I can discern, and let them draw their own conclusions. It's something my father did for me, and I respect and love him for it. He respects my perspective, whether we agree or not, as I do his.
She has a right to speak in public forum. But my opinion is that she has taken a narrow view that further generations of Christians will look back on and shake their heads at.
For President!
naytk:Here's where I'm going to risk a little:
What risk? You're being a good parent and raising your kid to have critical thinking skills and judgment ... and anything that doesn't stand up to 360 degrees of scrutiny was never on solid footing to begin with. We have discussions about this stuff with our kids (now 10.5 and nearly 12) all the time.

I agree - her homophobia shines through as well as so many other moralistic views ... it is rather embarassing that certain sects of Christians feel that it is OK to weild words like homosexual as though they were saying 'murdering rapist'
I have a hard time reading junk like that without getting extremely offended. It's hard to talk about religion without offending someone, somewhere and god forbid you say something to offend an over-zealous Christian (I'm stating an individual here, not saying that of the entire group), you never know what they'll do. They will go to any outlet they can find to rally more people of the faith behind them to try and restore their peaceful order.
When it comes to the theory of evolution, something that science is behind, and let us not forget that science is based on facts, religious folk tend to get all bothered. They were brought up on one specific story and can't concieve the thought of the book that they read could be wrong. I find it funny and ironic that this lady calls what Will Wright did "brainwash".
