Changing things up a bit for the release of Red Alert 3; i still think that this is crap but apparently they're taking some input from gamers.

PC games are dying because of it; it just proves to be more of a challenge for hackers and what does a hacker love more than a good challenge

Wow, Spore is getting hammered on it's Amazon customer reviews becuase of the DRM issue (currently over 1800 1 star reviews). I hope the days of games with limited installs are long gone, as it has an immediate affect on my Goozex-ability as a pc gamer. That being said, I'm really looking forward to Red Alert 3.
txa1265:No - they increased from 3 to 5 ... which is what happened with Bioshock right out of the gate! And they eliminated the 'phone home' ... which they already did for Mass Effect. As I said in my blog I am not getting Spore or Red Alert 3 ... or anything else that I would otherwise be on the fence about! I am tired of being treated like a criminal!
Nice blog post. That kind of DRM is way over the line.
I look forward to the day when congress is filled with people who grew up with these problems. One day, the people who advocated the defunct DMCA, and the people who exploit end users (yes, exploit) by not allowing them to play a game that they have rights to play, will have to answer to their consumers. It won't be pretty. Limits to number of installs? Ridiculous!
Keep your game. And to think, I just advocated this game 5 minutes ago for another reason.
For President!
Update on the Spore - DRM situation:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13772_3-10041188-52.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1_3-0-5I was very sad to hear Red Alert 3 was going to have DRM txa... I'm now having second thoughts about purcahsing it... although that is the game I've been most excited about above any other all year.
I havent had any issues with the DRM in Spore on my Mac...yet...

Well.. They'll eventually learn. A lot of music companies have lifted DRM and I'm sure in a year or so DRM will be gone. Funny thing is, though, that DRM has almost no effect on pirating. It's only a matter of a month or two before the DRM is cracked and it's mass-spread everywhere.
Ah well, I heard it's not even that great anyways.

haha a month or two? try a few days sometimes less.
Spore was on BitTorrent 3 or 4 days before it was released.
Main reason I refuse to buy any EA games (or any game from a publisher/developer that treats me like a criminal). StarDock has avoided doing this, so can other companies. I really looked forward to Mass Effect for PC, but thanks to DRM I won't buy it.
There's plenty of other great games to keep me occupied, anyway.

How would you know this?
Just kidding. But yeah, there were lots of complaints in the music industry about WMA/M4A DRM and eventually a lot of services put MP3's back. It's only a matter of time before EA gets a clue..
EDIT: I've been thinking a lot about this today and just wondered if getting the crack would allow the game to be more actively traded? I'm not sure on the legality of this or if it's possible (by the way, if this is against Goozex policy, please delete/edit out my post); but assuming this is legal as long as you own the game, the codes would never have to be used and the game would only be used to install. I've never bought a game with SecuROM protection though, so I wouldn't really know if this would work at all.
I've got no love for activation myself but you have to give some credit to EA. They have shown they respect us enough to tell us about it before hand.
Valve didn't tell anyone but their hard core fans about the steam requirements and the activation and mandatory download that comes with it. I don't remember anyone saying anything about the activation requirements for Two Worlds either.
If you want to attack someone then focus your anger on one of the companies who couldn't even be bothered to put the activation requirement on the box.
