Short answer: the old 80GB version has limited backwards compatibility through software emulation, which reportedly is not all that great even when games are technically supported.  All future versions of the PS3 (including the new 80GB models now out) will not have any backwards compatibility.

There are thousands of articles you can find though Google that go into way more depth on the subject.

Your best bet is to try to find a 60gb PS3. That plays all PS2 and all PSX games.

I got the 80 gig with the software PS2 (the Motorstorm bundle sku), and I've never had a problem with it.  I didn't even realize it was a software PS2 until someone said something.  The only annoyance is that the controllers disconnect from the PS3 before a game loads.

i also have the older moto storm bundled ps3. i have heard complaints that it has limited ps2 compatibility but it has always worked fine with my ps2 games but sometimes they take a couple of minutes to boot up. loading a ps2 game also always causes my controller to get disconnected. i just have to tap the ps button to fire it back up which wastes about ten seconds. this doesn't really bother me but alot of people get crazy angry over having that ten second wait. i still play on a large flat screen standard definition teevee so i have no complaints about image quality. alot of gamers with big hd sets complain that ps2 graphics suffer even with the hd options turned on. i have to guess the graphics look about as good as they would coming from a ps2 on these sets. after seeing things in giant hd after awhile your eye gets better at picking out choppy/clunky graphics.

Hey how are ya? To answer your question.. Yes PS3 80GB will play PS2 games. and I know this for a fact because i own the 80GB PS3. it plays PS1,2 and of course 3 games. you can also go on the internet with it and download any PS games you want...for a price though. Well hope that helps

Just to repeat what madfigs stated

20gb, 60gb, old 80 gb = backward compatible.

All new systems 40 gb, 80 gb, whatever gb = not backward compatible.
