I don't think that's an entirely fair statement. I was reading up on this game and it appears that while, yes, the game's concept began 10 years ago, it wasn't a work in progress the whole way through. Apparently they started getting it going and had to stop when Nintendo acquired the company and they had to work on other projects. It was something that was off and on for a long time. It's hard to get anything done right in that type of environment and someone must have been very passionate about it to see it the whole way through.
As far as the game itself goes, I really like it. I've gone through it twice now and I plan to do so with each class and then take one of those beyond multiple play throughs for loot whoring enjoyment. My first play through was with the Berserker class.
I'd like to state that choosing this class as your first play through is not the greatest idea. I toyed with the idea of which class I would take through first and somewhat reluctantly decided upon the Berserker class because I wanted a class that I felt would have a lot of action in battle. While that is true of the class (as is the case for any class really) the Berserkers low hp and my lack of knowledge of how the game mechanics really work was not a good starting point. Furiously charging into hordes of foes, bouncing off of them left and right was fun, until I kept dying...continuously. I thought that my melee skills for the class should have been more than enough to handle large groups of enemies, which is true in some cases, but it's not so bright to go charging into all enemies, namely ones that glow any type of color and sometimes you just don't see them until they explode! Also, my first encounter with a Troll was a little frustrating considering I didn't know how exactly to bring it down (my own fault). By the end of the game I finally had the class down to a comfortable level, but as stated by many people, the game is a little on the short side.
My second play through was with the Defender class. I had a lot more fun with this go-round. The Defender's high HP and defense made things much smoother and my proficiency with ranged weapons made for a more tactical play through. Peppering the mobs as they came in with shots and grenades and them finishing them off with melee as they closed in.
I plan on using the Bio Engineer class next. I heard so many bad things about this class that I avoided it for a while, but found that I may like it more than any of the other classes. It's ability to heal is nice since health orbs are random and its ability to remove status effects, i believe, is invaluable.
All in all, this is a very enjoyable game. It's not fun for someone to watch due to the constant switching from playing the game to tinkering with your inventory screen but overall, I am very pleased with the game as a whole.
Thanks for an actually fair review Catastrophic, most people bad mouthing this game have either never played it and are just on a hate-machine... or have only played the demo and didn't get used to the controls. Either that, or they just don't enjoy this type of game - in that case, its hard to bash the quality when you wouldn't like it even if it was perfect.
To each his own, and I can see why some wouldn't like it; however, I do.
I agree demo was meh, but game is a blast
I actually wanted to write a longer review (there's a scary thought, huh?) but I was given "more important" things to do by my wife.
I won't go into a crazy long speech (hopefully) but I did want to touch upon the things I dislike about the game. First and foremost is the annoyingly long time you have to wait to respawn after dying. Watching the Valkyrie come down the first couple of times was kind of cool, but I did not want to watch it everytime. Especially since I was the Berserker class and sometimes I would die multiple times on a single tough foe or boss. The first boss I remember being the most frustrating part of the game for me the first time through.
Next is the Cyberspace part of the game. I think it was a cool concept, but it seems something was lost in the translation. I don't mind that what you do in one world effects another, I think that is a cool concept, but why do you suddenly lose the ability to equip items? I don't think this is explained. It's relatively odd espeicially since you get tons of items and runes in these very areas.
Another small complaint I have is with the color modules you can equip on your weapons and armor to look uniform. I wish there was some way to sample the color before buying it. I enjoy making everything match a certain color and some colors are deceitfully bad. Like buying a "Radiant Red" that is the darkest color of red it pretty much looks black unless you look real hard. That and too many colors just look the same. I hope this remedies itself in the later levels of the game with multiple play throughs.
That's all I can think of right now. After reading a review I can agree that the story doesn't get really interesting until the very end, but that didn't really bother me. The gameplay alone kept me coming back.
I'm with you guys. I love Too Human, pretty much in the same way I love Monster Hunter and Diablo. It's that whole making-a-badass/loot-whoring aspect that keeps me endlessly entertained.
Of course, I also have my own issues with it:
Again, I love Too Human. I'm hopelessly addicted to it. It's just that there are so many design decisions that make me question what the developers were thinking when they put this together. It's all incredibly counter-intuitive. Then again, I'm usually having too much fun playing the game to care one way or the other.
Just as a reassurance to you guys, Dyack said they're going to patch a lot of things, including a skippable Valkyrie death animation.
Woo!
I'm hopefully getting this game soon. I really want to play it.
I find this game really addictive. Darn that loot!
However, it is the kind of game that takes a few hours to play before you get the hang of it. In fact, it wasn't until after my first play through that I realized there was more than 1 skill tree to populate!
It's a strange comparison, but I liken this game to Kameo. I feel both these games suffer a somewhat mediocre first play and then offer even better play after the credits roll.
It's not a perfect game, and its true that Dennis Dyack is a bit wacky (but well intentioned), but I think this game is a lot more than the sub 70% review scores would indicate.
Ways to know if you'll likely enjoy this game:
Someone on a different message board summed it up well, I think: "It's the most frustrating game I've ever loved."
Update: I hit level 50 with my Human Berserker a few days ago and have been doing loot runs ever since. For the record, Necrotize is a fricking amazing effect.
Best game Ever too bad I beat it in a week and got most the acheivements
