Can someone tell me what is wrong with my ps2. It just will not play newer games. For example: my gta3 and vice city play fine and load every time, but my san andreas gets disc read error until i open and close it like 10 times. game sucks but thats an example of whats going on. another is my ps2 has played nhl 04 but nhl 06 has problems. also, my ps2 just refuses to play shadows of the colossus. all games were bought new. nothin more than cosmetic scratches. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was having similar problems with mine a couples years back and what I did was just clean the lenses. That's it. After that my PS2 works fine and to this day I've had no problems lol.

Follow this guide: http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars

You might not have to adjust the lens, but you'll probably have to open the system up to clean it a bit. All I had to do with my PS2 was lube up the rails that the lens sits on with some WD-40.

thanks everybody. ran the disc cleaner again and it was a no go. i have doubts about opening the sytem up because it isnt like it wont play anything, after tryin shadow of colossus twice i just popped in the orignal tomb raider followed by gta1 so i just dont get it. i thought it had something to do with the color of the disc bottom but i popped in twisted metal black that has the same color as shadow and it worked fine. i am certain it has somethin to do with the publish date of the ps2 games. does anyone know anything about such a thing happening to older ps2 (gran turismo 3 bundle). again thanks for your help.

i know that my ps2 was an original issue and eventually stopped playing games pretty much, i remember having to flip the console upside down in order to get it to play a game.  Eventually i buckled down and traded it in at GS (with like a bonus 20 or 30% trade in credit towards ps slim) and got a new ps2 slim, i dont know what the trade in values are any more but i remember paying only like $30 for my slim after trade in, something you might want to look into

Well you're not doing anything major when you open up your PS2. If you've got a slim, you don't even have to open it up to clean the laser.

Unless you're a total idiot, it's pretty hard to harm your PS2 when you're just cleaning the laser. Just open it up from the bottom, flip it over, take off the laser casing and gently rub a Q-tip with rubbing alcohol on it and you'll have your games working in no time.

If you have a slim, all you do is open the fliptop and clean the laser, REALLY simple and will most likely solve your problem. The only thing to keep in mind while opening a fat PS2 is to make sure that the ribbon that goes to the power button is not in the way when you put the PS2 back together.

yea well i opened it up and messed with the positioning of the laser and whatnot. no good. in fact every settin that wasnt the original prevented ps1 games from playing. that was a good waste of about 2 hours thanks for the recomendation though. but yea ive already cleaned the laser twice and it cannot be dirty man it just cant. why else would it play ps1 games, blue ps2 games, and gray ps2 games, just not newer ones. it is seriously ridiculous ps2 doesnt have system updates does it?

I've never heard of anything like this. There is nothing really that can explain why this is happening if you've adjusted the POT and cleaned the laser. I don't think PS2's as a whole can read DVD-DL, so that's probably not the issue with your new games. They're just regular DVD's too, some older model PS2's can't read CD-Rom games (Blue underside) but yours does. The only thing I can come up with is that maybe some of your other games are scratched and your PS2 has become accustomed to only those games.. Doubt that's it though lol.

If you really want those new games, I think the only way to do this is go to Gamestop and trade in your PS2 and a game that does work (if they test it) and get a slim.

unless you can grab one of the 80gig models out now prior to the new release, there is no b/w compatability

I had a problem with one of my old PS2s that sounds a lot like yours. It was strangely choosy, like it had a mind of its own. I'd try one game 10 times, and it would play 10 times in a row. I'd try a different one, and it didn't work 10 times in a row. It was completely random. There were blue (CD) disks that worked and blue disks that didn't, likewise with the silver (DVD) ones. There were older, heavily scratched ones that worked, and newer, perfect condition ones that didn't. Yet, there were also newer ones that worked too. It's almost like the PS2 kept an internal memory of which games it would play and which ones it wouldn't. No amount of cleaning or adjusting changed that either. As time went by, I guess as the console's "condition" degraded, more and more games were moved to the "not work" column, until I just broke down and bought a new Slimline.

Honestly, to this day I have no idea what caused it. It's all very peculiar to me. Sometimes I have nightmares about a bunch of broken PS2s with minds of their own, getting together and formulating a plot to take over the world.
