There is actually quite a bit that is great, AAA, classic or whatever term that you allocate to must-play gaming experiences.  And despite the system's small size, there is a diversity of different gaming experiences on this little guy.  Let us know what genres you are looking for, and we can be more helpful.  There are also a number of good threads here in the DS forum with good recommendations.

I agree - scan the existing threads and come back with specifics.  We can help more that way.  If you are interested in handheld RPG's I do a somewhat-monthly article at RPGWatch covering RPG's on all handhelds.  One was out a few weeks ago and another one is coming soon.

I guess as far as a handheld would go, RTS, Sports, action/adventure, and puzzle games would interest me the most. Traditional RPG's (Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Blue Dragon) Ive had a very hard time getting into.

I honestly don't know of many RTS games on the DS, but you might like Age of Empires and  Final Fantasy Tactics A2: The Sealed Grimoire, when it's released next month.

Those are turn-based strategy, like Advance Wars (*still* the best handheld strategy game, even over the PSP Jeanne D'Arc).  RTS have not been good on the DS (none on the PSP), but a couple like Lost Magic and Heroes of Mana try to have RPG mixed with RTS.  Lost Magic is much better and much more RPG, and darn hard.  Heroes of Mana isn't so great.

Also don't forget that your DS has the capabilities to play GBA games, and there are some real beauties there.  I would even go so far as to say that some GBA games rival the quality and greatness of the DS era.

And many are better than anything *either* new handheld has to offer ...

I thought Puzzle Quest was great: I couldn't put the game down.

I'll second Phoenix Wright. I also really enjoyed Pac-Pix, Puyo Pop Fever & Planet Puzzle League.

Where to start... Here are some gotta-have's that aren't too many points:

Magnetica

MarioKart

Point Blank

Break'em All

Super Monkey Ball

Enjoy!

-Advance Wars is great, and at times quite challenging. I highly recommend it even if you aren't too interested in turn based strategy games.

-Zelda: Phantom Hour Glass is simply amazing. One of the most enjoyable games I've played in a long time on any system.

-Mario Kart

-Elite Beat Agents. I found this game very enjoyable...and I'm not into rhythm/music games. It's fun, unique, is replayable.

-both of the Castlevania games are fun. Nothing that hasn't been done before but they're good.

-Yoshi's Island

-Wario Ware

-if you're not afraid of appearing, well, slightly nerdy...try and import a copy of Ultimate Jump Stars....it's like Smash Bros but with all these Japanese manga characters.

-New Super Mario Bros. It's a quick game but a lot of fun.

-Trama Center. Unique, fun...but damn hard.

That's what comes to mind right now.....there are a lot of great RPGs out there for the DS as well....but most have a more "tradiational" feel.

A RPG that I found really fun and is now my fav for the DS is Dragon quest monsters: Joker

Meteos is really great, but I don't know why people on this forum don't think so
