I have been a little burnt out on FPS at the moment and have been playing Lost Odyssey. This has sparked an old love towards RPGs that I have been lacking the past couple of years. I was wondering if anyone who is really into RPGs have any suggestions on what I should pick up. I would prefer it for the XBOX 360, but PS2 would be fine as well. I have a ton of points and an itching to play some good RPGs. Big Smile

If American RPGs are up your alley, I'd say give 40 pus hours of your life to Oblivion, or maybe even Mass Effect...if you are more the jRPG kinda guy, there really isn't too much to suggest for the 360, umm, Blue Dragon.  Maybe someone else here has a sharper mind in the morning than I.

There is Eternal Sonata, Blue Dragon, Phatansy Star Universe for the 360.  Though there are others Enchanted Arms, but I've heard very bad things about that.  I haven't played Eternal Sonata but I tried the demo and it reminded me a lot of Radiata Stories for the ps2 which was an excellent game.  I think if you enjoy jRPG's you'll like Blue Dragon, it's kind of childish so far (I'm 25+ hrs in on Disc 1) but I enjoy it.  I haven't really gotten far enough in on PSU to make any recommendations but it is not just an online game.

For the ps2 I recommend FFX, FFXII, Suikoden III (my favourite of the series), Suikoden IV, Suikoden V (my wife's favourite of the series) and Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria.  I mentioned Radiata Stories earlier, Star Ocean Til the End of Time, Dragon Quest VIII and Rogue Galaxy just to name a few.  Though Radiata, Star Ocean and Rogue are more action oriented.  Those are just some of my favourites.  Hope this helps.

EDIT:

I'm a little jealous that I haven't gotten to play Lost Oddyssey yet, I made a deal with my wife that I have to finish Rogue Galaxy and Blue Dragon before I can pick it up.

Not too sure if you have played these yet but the Kingdom Heart series are a couple of amazing games. They may have Disney characters but they make them seem very real and as odd as it sounds very human. Oh and let's not forget about Dragon Quest VIII. That is also an amazing game.

All of the ones mentioned for 360 are great, I would rate the best three as Mass Effect, Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata. For PS2 Dragon Quest VIII is a must as are the Shadow Hearts games. Also don't forget the Knights of the Old Republic series on Xbox. They are BC.

I suggest the following for the PS2

  • Shadow Hearts Series (Original, Convenent, From the New World)
  • Shin Megami games, (i.e. Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2, Nocturne, Persona 3)
  • Dark Cloud 1 and 2
  • Arc the Lad (End of Darkness and Twilight of the Spirits)
  • Atelier Iris series (I heard this one was good by other RPG players)
  • Disgaea 1 and 2 (Tactical game)
  • Final Fantasy X or XII
  • Kingdom Hearts (Wasn't the type of game for me, but I heard great things about it)
  • Legaia 2
  • Odin Sphere
  • Ys Ark of Napishtim
  • Xenosaga Series
  • Wild Arms Series
  • Valkyrie Profile Silmeria
  • Bard's Tale (crude humor)
  • Fallout Brotherhood of Steel (I liked the beginning but will come back to this in the summer)
  • Dragon Quest VIII
  • Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 (American type RPG, part 2 may be hard to come by)
  • Champions of Norrath and Return to Arms (American RPG)
  • Grandia Series
Hope that gives you some games to search for. ^__^

I have not played it yet, but Odin Sphere for the PS2 is suppose to be absolutely remarkable.

Oh, and Puzzle Quest on XBL arcade.  If you like your RPG's with a dash of bejeweled.

Thank you guys so much for all of the feedback! I have heard of a couple of these games, but som I have no idea about. I thank you for all of your suggestions, I will have to check all of these out. I am really interested in Odin Sphere, so I think I will be picking that up today. I also had one other question, how is Culdcept Saga for the 360? Has anyone played it or heard of a review on it?

Culdcept Saga is addictive as hell. I find myself playing one more game everytime I pop it in.

Oblivion, Morrowind & The Bard's Tale.

And while not an RPG, Overlord is great fun, and plays on some RPG ideas (you're questing, really).

Did Tales of Symphonia ever hit the PS2?  I had played that on the GameCube and actually finished it, not common in my relationship with JRPGs.  Recommended.
