I just rented NMH this weekend based on all the user hype and good reviews, but I have to say I'm pretty underwhelmed. The fighting is pretty fun but generally shallow after the repitition. The graphics though are really getting in the way for me. I am usually not bothered if a game doesn't have stunning graphics. While NMH has decent visuals, I find them to be very messy or unclear. They are not visually appealing to look at. And coupled with the slow parts driving around the city on the awful bike, the bland sub-missions, and the schizo story...I don't know. It's just not working for me. Do you think it's really as great as the hype or just a decent Wii game that's getting elevated because of the slim pickings.
No More Heroes was developed by the same people who made Killer 7 and while it was by no means a big hit, it did create a cult following. The graphics are a part of what they used in Killer 7, cell shading, which is stylistic in the sense that it is not used that often and allows for a more art-like feel to the game. I cannot comment on the actual gameplay though, I haven't played it yet.
I agree with you totally, I think all the hype ruined it for me. If i was told it was just ok and went in with mediocre expectations then I think I would have liked it more. It just didn't click with me personally and I usually like the japanese style games. One good thing about this is that at least it gives Wii owners a decent game besides Nintendo's developed games and RE4. I think its a tough time for Wii owners if they are not into all the mini game compilations that seem to come out everytime I blink. At least Smash Bros. will be out soon for me to fall in love with my Wii again.
I think that it is a good enough experience for all to play. There really isn't that much of quality on the Wii, and NMH is one of the few games that should be tried out...outside of the Nintendo produced titles. It is a noble effort.

Turn game on. Laugh for a few minutes (not a bad thing) at the creative art style. Laugh even more when you have to recharge the beamsword by making gestures that no one over the age of 12 would make in public. Quickly lose interest because there really isn't anything new in the way you kill enemies.
I think I've just played so many games likes No More Heroes that I just got bored too quickly. Sure, there may be unique boss fights further it, but games have to keep my interest with the meat of the gameplay.

I did find it all that entertaining. I actually played it for about 2 hours and traded it away the same day I received it.

And actually I can't wait to get this package from you, PSWii60, so I can cradle it in my arms and whisper "Don't worry, I'll love you more than that cold hearted PSWii60 ever could."
I loved the game. The combat flowed well, the writing was great (as it was with Killer7) and the boss fights were all amazing. The bits in between the ranked matches did tend to drag along after a bit, though. It got especially bad around rank 4 or 3, but the rank 2 fight and the finale made up for it.
I guess that, like Killer7, it's not a game for everyone.

klip, your posts have been killing me. Keep up the good cheer.
Personally, I think it's a very flawed game that still manages to entertain me. It's worth a play through for me, because I enjoy the game, and the fanboy humor in it, a simple beat-em up fighting mechanic that is very stress relieving (fountains of blood FTW!). I think it should definitely be a rental, if not an outright purchase (or, Goozex purchase anyway).
Besides, there are times where I think it's important to buy games for reasons other than gameplay. I bought Audiosurf on Steam and Everyday Shooter on the PSN because I think it's important to support indie developers, so as not to scare off other possible risk takers, and I think we need to show Wii devs that we want to play "hardcore" games on our Wii, ando not just the crappy minigames that get shoveled onto the system every week. Suda 51 has gone on record as saying he's disappointed by the sales- c'mon guys, let's help the pioneers and make the Wii great!

Thanks for the kind words Lurk

I completely agree SMX. I’m not usually very good at keeping this perspective (hence getting No More Heroes from Goozex), but it is important to remember that our wallets do the voting when it comes to which game is ultimately a success, and which developers we keep employed doing creative work instead of them getting delegated to pumping out the shovelware. It is funny to discuss this kind of thing on Goozex forums though. Gamestop has been called a parasite for how much of a profit they make off their used games - whereas Gamestop differs from Goozex in how they milk their customers dry, Gamestop and Goozex are similar in how both essentially cut a margin of profits from developers by giving consumers the means to purchase or trade used games (instead of outright buying them new). But so long as games exist on disk or cartridge a used market will exist. I am wary of direct downloads because I like the physicality of a disk or cartridge… but if the future is direct downloads, and it ends up getting more money to developers while also getting the product to consumers for a cheaper price, I could embrace that.
Personally my days of buying Wii games for myself are over. I did happen to buy Go! Diego Go! Safari for my 4 year old and he absolutely loves it and I get a huge kick out of watching him play it. That, in a nut shell, is what my Wii has become, my 4 year old's console.
Anyone who has really young kids and a Wii I highly recommend this game. My son was literally out of breath playing it, and I was as well from laughing at him playing it.

Thanks so much for the tip! I'll have to investigate this game. It's shockingly difficult to find good lasting games for my son. Even a game like Link's Crossbow Training, which seems like a no-brainer kid game, is too difficult for him to aim at the screen very well and play for more than a few minutes at a time.
