Taken from a review I wrote for Gears of War:

There are thousands of  other reviews for Gears, so I'm going to skip the game explanation and get right down to my likes and dislikes.

Likes:

* Non-stop action combined with innovative control. This is what shooters should be. Future shooters have an awful lot to live up to.

* Absolutely gorgeous graphics. Gears looks stunning in HD. Detailed environments and nicely-done cut scenes really add to the immersion.

* Lots of achievements and modes to keep you coming back for more. Online play, co-op, and more, greatly add to the value.

Dislikes:

* Shorter than I would have liked. With five chapters, Gears isn't overly short but it does have a rather abrupt ending. I was slightly dissatisfied with the obvious sequel setup.

* No multiple saves. I find it extremely annoying that I can only have one saved checkpoint at a time. If you start a new co-op game, you will overwrite any existing single-player campaign checkpoint. For a game that just begs to be played through in both modes, this seems like a rather large drawback. It is made slightly less painful by the ability to start from any checkpoint in chapters you have completed.

* Slightly underdeveloped backdrop. Although you can read some of the back story in the instruction manual, I would have preferred a little more in-game history, told through some of the game's awesome cut scenes.

Overall, the pros vastly outweigh the cons - so much so that I would call them 'minor annoyances' rather than cons. I'm eagerly awaiting the inevitable sequel.

If you own a 360 and enjoy shooters, you owe it to yourself to pick up Gears of War.

I liked the game and also thought that this game is just amazing for playing alone and with a buddy.  This game combines graphics of Lost Planet and Dead Rising with the gameplay of Halo.  I actually just got matched up to recieve my second copy so that I can get online with more friends at home.  The controls are really intuitive and I love the way that this game makes the cover more and more important as you move on.  Unlike Halo this game is very much in your face and it is not all about sniping.  Bleeding out, active reload, and frag tags are all features, as far as I know, that are new gaming elements that will show a lot of promise.  The story of this one is lacking, however is a good setup if the sequel delivers in storyline this series could prove to be one of the best ever.  There does absolutely without a doubt need to be a party system and ranking system like that of halo or rainvow six.

Replayability 9/10

Graphics 10/10

Gameplay 10/10

Achievments 7/10

Final Verdict 9/10 Must Have

What is left to be said about Gears?

Campaign is a fantastic experience, even better with a buddy. Scenery and locations are simply breathtaking - be sure to stop and smell the roses and you're tearing through hordes of Locust.

Multiplayer has its quirks, but it's still a excellent frantic experience. It's light on game modes, but I don't really see 'capture the flag' working too well here. My biggest complaint with multiplayer is the fact that you CANNOT CHANGE OPTIONS IN A GAME LOBBY. People will complain about 'host advantage' which can be a problem, but nothing irks me as much as the criminal oversight of not being able to change game options between matches WITHOUT starting a new room. Seriously Epic, COME ON!

Despite these things Gears seldom leaves my 360. Just wish 360 owners were getting the additional content that will be coming to the PC version (sniff).

i just recently started playing this again, mostly on multiplayer but it was enough to make me put it on hold on my library list on goozex. i forgot how much fun it was to flank, frag, curb stomp and repeat.

Gears of War is a great 3rd person shooter... if u wanna call it that. it has a chainsaw/assault rifle, shotgun, pistols, sniper, torqure bow(flaming exploding bow and arrow), u can tag people with grenades, theres the boomshot(rockets) and hammer burst and hammer of dawn(laser come from sky and kills). and when you shoot someones head, it pops off, very gory game, love it. you can chainsaw the opposing team in half. Online play is great, u got 4 modes, warzone, exacution, assasination, and annex. all are great, but warzone is my favorite. all the maps are great, some incluse a mansion, train station, subway, grave yard and more!  its 4 v 4. you can also melee to stun your opponent for a secgrendaes can also stun opponents if they are within range. another cool feature is the leaderboards. you can see where you rank among everyone, or just your friends, for each gametype. Some may not care, but many do.Also, there are ranked matches, and unranked. Ranked counts kills, deaths, etc, unranked doesnt.

Campaign is great too, you can play with up to 4 players. You can play online also. Been a while since I played campaign, but its awesome. Many levels, all different and unique. you have to take out many locusts (moster) throughout the game. there are 4 difficulty settings, easy, normal, hard, insane, I beat em all, though insane you usually need a partner, for some missions.....Oh and the characters... Marcus Fenix is the main character, hes the big fearless leader. Dominic Santiago is Fenix's main pertner, a hispanic guy. Baird is the squads mechanic, cole train is a huge former football player. Carmine is a rookie pretty much, and dressed in fully body armor. Kim is another character(male asain). And Victor Hoffman the old vet.

Like I said, great game, great gameplay. online community still very strong after almost 2 years
