I have very fond memories of playing Resident Evil with the lights off, my wife watching like it was a movie. Resident Evil: the game that set the standard for terrible voice acting.
While the game was a ton of fun to play on the original PlayStation, it hasn't held up particularly well, especially when compared to some of the newer titles in the series like Resident Evil 4. With the advances in graphics and sound the series has made in recent years, there's not much reason to go back to the original.
However, if you're a collector looking to round out their collection, you can't go wrong with the 200 point price tag. Nostalgia is priceless.

I have to be honest here, I started with Resident Evil with RE2. I didn't play the original until the re-make on the Game Cube. I don't know how or why I missed it the first time around, but the re-make was pretty damn great.

I think that I know why you may have avoided the series from the get-go...the horrible controls, made horrible and intentionally kept that way for gameplay purposes...and the fixed cameras were a pain in the arse as well. Again, intentional for the scare effect.
