Just watching the awards in TV right now... live from Las Vegas. Awesome show Smile (Spike TV)

Game of the year 2007: Bioshock

Nominees: Mass Effect, Halo 3, Orange Box

The show was presented by Samuel Jackson..... very fun seeing the Pulp Fiction killer become a hard-core gamer Smile

This is the  Official link with all entries!

I've been catching some bits and peices of it here and there. For game of the year, where is Call of Duty 4?? I disagree with Bioshock being GOTY, but thats my opinion. I played it and it hasn't kept me hooked like COD4 and Halo 3. Was there an online poll for the nominees? Anyone know how they come up with these?

The only thing I disagreed with (and it is on symantics, so I am the one in error) is the Best RPG of the Year.  Mass Effect wasn't really an RPG in the true spirit of the term, all of those other games had more RPG elements and whatnot than ME did.  Clearly it is nice looking and it had some depth to it all but in the end, it was a shooter first.

Mass Effect may have seemed like a shooter, sort of like a watered-down Gears of War style, but the nuts and bolts of the combat was in the stats.  Yes you have to aim and shoot, but the same old calculations were made for hit and miss, it didn't depend solely on the players accuracy and reflex like a real FPS does.

So I think Mass Effect belongs in the running for the award, however, I would have given 1st place to The Witcher (PC) instead.

The only main contenders I've played this year were Halo 3 and Bioshock. Of the two, I'd say Bioshock was more impressive. Halo 3 obviously because of the Multiplayer had more replay value though. Just started playing Orange Box last night. I might have a different opinion on GOTY soon.

Surprisingly, I agreed with just about everything they picked.

The same can be said about Castlevania from the point of Symphony of the NIght and onward, but they don't change it from being an action game with RPG elements.  That is what Mass Effect truly was, an action game that had some RPG elements thrown in.  Of course (and again, I throw out the disclaimer) that it is all symantics.

I thought that it was just a huge marketing splurge.  I doubt that guys like Samuel L. and all the others are really gamers.  All this said however, I do like Bioshock as game of the year, but how is it not shooter of the year, and valve was studio of the year, makes zero sense.

Oh yeah big surprise, Halo 3 won the award sponsored by Mountain Dew.

I think it makes sense. BioShock is great, not so much for the shooter aspect, but for the atmosphere, story, graphics, and immersion. CoD4 is mostly about shooting stuff. And it does it really, really, really well. As for Valve, they managed to release a compilation package where every single game rocks. And for the price of a single game. How often does that happen?

I think these are the worst sort of trash that have little to do with games and more to do with opportunities for celebs to get more camera time ... and the honos always go to the same ol' same ol' ... but that is just my cynical grumpy old man take on it Big Smile

I agree txa, Its all about people plugging projects and releasing new trailers. They even created a catagory just to get Halo3 an award.

I dont understand how the hell COD4 wasnt even a finalist for game of the year.

Because it would have interfered with Halo 3 ... which was already the decided winner.

Actually it wasnt, Bioshock was. But like I said, I do like how they create a Mountain Dew award just so Halo 3 didnt walk away empty handed.
