There was review on Evil Avatar that give it 4/5, but said the game was pretty short: finished in 7 1/2 hours, including side missions.

For what it's worth IGN gave it a 93.  Who knows what that really means Smile

Depends on which IGNer wrote the review.  :) But it usually means "big name publisher bought a lot of ad space, make sure someone who reviews this game loved the preview build"

I think most gamers will be doing themselves a disservice if they avoid this game simply because Jack Black is in it.

All of Tim Schafer's games have been excellent in my opinion.  He continually delivers humorous games with very memorable characters set in places you've not yet experienced in any previous game.

That being said, the mechanics aren't always the best which can make them a little off putting.  Psychonauts was at times a bit of a chore to control and Grim Fandango was a clunky psuedo-3D adventure game .  But I would encourage you to not let the mechanics stop you from trying any of his games.

So while Schafer's games are certainly far from perfect gameplay wise, they are certain worth experiencing as he has created some of the most memorable worlds and characters to date.

If the voice acting is enough to put you off from Brutal Legend, I'm terribly sorry that you may have missed out on games like Street Fighter 2, Resident Evil, and Castlevania SotN in the past.

Just the fact that Black has experience in voice acting (Kung Fu Panda) gives me a bit more hope that the spoken lines might not completely fall flat.

Tim Shafer has a good enough track record in my opinion that I'm sure I'll be laughing quite a bit throughout the game, no matter who says the lines.

I only read the 1st and last pages of this thread, but I'll throw in my 2 cents.

Hexpane:

I don't understand people who think Jack Black is funny, then again I've never met any.

I quite enjoyed School of Rock and Kung Fu Panda, as I'm pretty sure many people did. Both of these movies he not only starred in, but had a large influence in.

mrkekeru:
I'm no Jack Black fan, but Carlos Mencia, Dane Cook, and Jeff Foxworthy, and many others who might be less popular, are much less funny.

And I agree with that. He isn't terrible, although he certainly isn't the best.

Totally agree. Plus I think Jack Black's voice suits the guy really well.

I've been playing through the game for a while, and while I was not completely floored by the amazing voice acting, JB did actually do a pretty decent job as the main character. The problem is, the first thing you see after the EA and double Fine logos is his fat ugly mug IN PERSON giving the intro movie, and doing a piss poor job at it, which kind of hurts the game from the get go. But then the actual game starts and it's pretty damn awesome. Pikmin+DMC set in a sandbox version of heavy metal magazine. So far this is GOTY for me, although I'll just see once november comes around.

Anyway, if you are afraid of Jack Black just press start instead of watching the intro, you'll forget he's even there. The gameplay is fun, and perhaps unsurprisingly, the metal legends they got to do cameos did MUCH worse jobs with their voiceovers than Jack.

I can understand not liking Jack Black (or any other entertainer) but some fo the hatred is silly. You would think he had a threesome with your girlfriend and your mother while killing your dog.
Well I don't hate him, but it is kind of insulting having him as the main character in a game about metal, especially when they got real musicians to participate. That's like making a game about filmmaking, with cameos by Orson Welles, Sergio Leone and Stanley Kuberick, except the main character is played by Michael Bay.

You kind of state my rebuttal... here

Well like I said, I'm perfectly happy with Jack Black the voice actor, it's Jack Black the overexposed shmoe I'm weary of. I would have also been happy if they hired some nameless but qualified professional VA, but Jack did alright either way.

You show me where Jack Black did VA for those games and I'll show you that I missed them.   There's a huge difference in horrible voice acting quality and horrible Jack Black.

Well first of all, Metacritic says 84. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

But all this useless banter about how "Jack Black sucks" or "this game looks horrible" there is a simple solution to all of this. Don't buy the damn game. Seriously. I don't get why people bitch about games they never intend to give a second look.

Personally, I like Jack Black, I think he's funny sometimes, not all the time, sometimes. I had my doubts about this game too but I gave it a chance by playing the demo and thought it was tons of fun and funny.

What it comes down to is 'Am I willing to pay 60 bucks for this game? Will it entertain me and will I have fun?" With this game, so far, yes! Hell, even if you don't want to pay for it we have sites like this one where you can sit in line and wait. WIth all those haters out there I'm sure you won't be in line long.

Well, Jack Black arguements aside, I played the demo and it perhaps it's a case of it not doing the game justice but I found the combat bland the graphics average and the sound effects subpar.  The characters and storyline however seemed VERY interesting, well thought out and well presented.

Again, it was just a demo and there have been numerous times where demos just DON'T do a game justice (most recently Wolfenstein, which is a GREAT game but had a lousy demo) so I'll have to wait till I get from Goozex but the demo sure didn't make me wanna run out buy it.

People are spending waaaaaaaay too much time focusing on Jack Black.

On the cover, it say's "Tim Schafer's Brutal Legend." Tim Schafer, not Jack Black. Don't hate the game because Jack Black is in it (and does a great job, no less), love it because Tim Schafer made it.

Also, the amount of "Yawn, what you think is cool is actually lame. That's how cool I am," in this thread is staggering.

Yeah I'll second that, I pretty much just skimmed through the majority of the pretentious drivel that was spewing out of this thread.
