Uggggghhh....if anybody saw the last 4:00 minutes of the Ravens-Pats game you know what I'm talking about...The perfect storm had formed -- an underperforming team, don shula in attendance, high winds, boller had his game on, defense was holding their end of the bargain, and McGahee was just going nuts...
Then the Pats down with 3 minutes to go, hit 3 different fourth downs...TD....ugggggghhhhh....but wait...Boller throws a hail mary...caught! on the 2....ugggggghhhhhh
Ravens suck, I know...and this was their super bowl...
Best game of the year by far no doubt!
I know you guys being from Maryland are obviously Ravens fans, but here up in the Northeast we adore the Patriots despite the controversies and such. I don't even really follow football but I enjoy watching the Pats play anyhow...I would have been able to watch the entire game from the poker room (on our nice 50" TVs plastered on the walls) but they sent me home after only one hour of work the last two days...bummer :( Good for Goozexing, but very, very bad for the Goomba wallet. From what I saw though it was a great game no doubt!
The Ravens should have won. I feel so bad for the Ravens D. They played so well and so hard. Two things that pissed me off about the game...why did Kyle Boller throw that long interception up by 7. Who was he throwing to? Did the wind just take it? The other were the bad calls during the final few minutes, especially that holding call on the 2nd Fourth down. Argh, and that timeout on first 4th Down was painful. I think that it is time that Brian Billick steps down. This is a team on the brink....I say bring back Marvin Lewis. He's bound to be on the hot seat.

Okay guys, don't laugh, but as someone who grew up in a baseball-fanatacized family, I know next to nothing about Football. I watch it on TV in the poker room like I said, but I have no idea what the terms "first down" or "hail mary" (I think that's like a long shot pass?) mean.... I don't know the scoring system or anything and I probably couldn't name more than 10 players in total. Okay get the laughing out of your system...My question here is where on earth do you learn these sports if you didn't grow up watching them? I mean is it a dorky thing to go to say Wikipedia and study up on the rules to understand them? Would playing Madden or similar games help fill me in on the finer details/rules/moves? Seriously I'm the biggest n00b when it comes to sports, and I've been left out of the loop. Let me know what you think ...
Don't feel ashamed. Most of my guy friends, and even those that think that know about football...don't really understand the game. There is a difference between sitting around all of Sunday and watching games....than watching one game, looking at the fight in the trenches, seeing how defensive coordinators switch things up, watch how teams re-evaluate things after half-time, etc.
My suggestion is to first start watching games with a football fan. Just listen to him talk during a game and about a game. This will at least get you into a mindset. But then I would highly recommend hunkering in front of your tv on Sunday morning, and watch a ton of ESPN. You will learn a lot, and it is really like studying in school...that is the degree of detail that they go into looking at game film, etc.
I think Madden can certainly help, I learned a lot of football terms and situations from that as a kid. Wikipedia probably wouldn't hurt either, especially if you used it as a reference while watching the game.
In reference to the Ravens game, I'm pretty sure Billick finally lost his job with that stupid, worthless, 4th down icing time-out. Oh man that was bad.
I see almost all the games of the year for every sport at the casino but they're all muted and many of them have subtitles off...so I lose a lot of the commentary you talk about. Also, at home I have no cable (never saw the use of it since I'm so busy with my two 1/2 jobs all the time and seldom home). I appreciate the suggestions though ^_^ I don't really want to learn it to the level that you guys know it, because going that deep makes my head spin, but I would like to be able to watch and know what "second down" and all that terminology means or know how much a touchdown is worth (6 points?) or the various ways of scoring. Heck, aside from the quarterback I don't even know what the other positions are...truly sad.
I just joined up with Gamefly to try out the service in order to be able to buy their used games (which from what I here are amazingly in good condition). I just got Zack & Wiki to rent and I suppose adding Madden Wii to there would be a good start :) I hear it makes good use of the Wii Remote and is easier to understand for non-football-junkies. Thanks for the suggestions guys. Also Rocky Top H, what character is your avatar? I like the art style :)
As a Vikings fan, I have no say in the matter whatsoever, but I can say that this is what I expected from the Baltimore defense. They were on the field for a long time in that second half and the offense was sure giving the Pats some great attempts. The meltdown itself was a bit unexpected, but seeing that the players won the game on the field and the coaching staff just blew it with the time out, and that led to the massive penalties.
I have to agree though, at this point Billick needs to go for his own good. Ray Lewis will rip him apart in the press this week, for sure.

Being that you aren't a sports fan, getting a older year, non-current year, football game would be your easiest and most cost-effective solution. Us sports fans by the latest iteration because of our fanatic love for roster updates and realism...but you can do without all of that. NFL 2k5 (on xbox) is arguably one of the best football games available.
It is very true about you die-hard sports fans...because nearly half of Gamestop is filled with like $5 football games and such and many of them aren't even that old. I'll look into NFL 2K5 now ^_^ Thanks Lurk!

She's actually Wendy, as in "Wendy's Old-Fashioned Hamburgers", from the fast-food place. It's from a drawing of a mock fighting game between fast-food mascots.
I would post the full picture, but I'm not sure what image hosting sites are allowed here.
Also, I second NFL 2K5. The announcing is much better than the modern Madden games.
Billick isn't stepping down and he made the right call with the time out. It was a tough call and hindsight (even 2 seconds later) is always 20/20 -- but if the Pats got a first down...brilliant decision no?
The Raven's owner has said that Billick will be his coach for the next 10-15 years...and I like that as a fan...he's not a bad coach and if you give him offensive players I'm sure he can take the team deep...McNair, Boller are not top of mind when it comes to offense.
Depending on where you live in Maryland you can have many different favorite teams. The Ravens' fans are from Baltimore area and west. The southern part of the state roots for the Redskins. You've got a ton of Steeler and Eagle fans here too.
I'm not really into sports, but working at a Casino I can't help but see this stuff sometimes, and I'll admit it was pretty exciting to watch. Too bad players can't pull these types of plays out of their ass earlier in the game instead of waiting until it's do or die time.
When I saw that the ravens were ahead I started shouting out "COME ON SPOIL THOSE SUNSUVBITCHES SEASON!"
