I think it's amazing how many people on this site are from Maryland. I hail from Germantown, MD. Grew up there until I moved to MN in 2002. Seeing all the cities listed, especially Montgomery Village, makes me miss home.

I sure don't miss the hussle and bussle of the beltway though!

Hello,  I don't know how long it has been since you have been here in Montgomery County, but things sure have changed since I last lived here about 8 years ago.  (prior to law school and college).  Anyhow, Germantown is no longer the sleepy agrarian town as it once was as it has all of the hustle and bustle of Rockville and the Pike, believe it or not.

Really? That's too bad. I've gotten so used to Minnesota that I'd probably have a heart attack from the break-neck speed of life that I remember Maryland to be.

Do they still have the lame ass Montgomery County fair with pig races and all that? I remember loving that as a kid. I'm sure most of what I liked in MD has been replaced by Starbucks and McDonald's left and right.

Yes, being that I live in Montgomery Village and armed with a 16 month old, my wife begged for us to go to the Montgomery County Ag. Fair.  And we went to the fairgrounds of Gaithersburg to see the same ol' tired pig races, old folks wittling wood, John Deere tractors galore, tractor pulls and the night-time Demolition Derby.  It is the weirdest thing to see in Montgomery County, even Frederick wouldn't have something this tired anymore.  My early memories of the Fairgrounds are going there for those cheap-o computer part/wholesaler fairs.

There are now 3 Starbucks (1 in Lakeforest Mall) and 7 McDonald's in Gaithersburg alone now.  And btw, Shady Grove Hospital is now Rockville, White Flint Mall is now in North Bethesda, and parts of Darnestown are now North Potomac.

I'm in Chevy Chase, grew up in Potomac. The area has changed, but I like the faster pace. They managed to turn my neighborhood into Rodeo Drive, which seems odd. Quiet little Chevy Chase is quite the hot spot these days. Bethesda's fairly similar-more built up, but still chock full of restaurants.

As for the fair, I concur, it was lame. But I did get funnel cake, so that's good!

You should try coming up to PA. The Dutch up here invented the stuff. It's like a dietary staple.

We have the same problems as MD, though. All the big city people are coming and ruining everything great about the area.

Oh man, Lakeforest mall. The memories! I cut my teeth of video gaming up there at the arcade they had next to the theater. I believe it was called Champions. My friend and I would take turns whomping ass in Xmen vs Street Fighter and other competitive games. I remember when Killer Instinct first came out up there, people were selling paper game guides at the arcade for like $3.

I wouldn't mind some Kelly's Cajun Grill from Lakeforest, right about now. And if you live in that area and haven't ordered from Starvin Marvin, you are doing yourself a disservice.

I agree, the Pennsylvania Dutch are absolutely known for their carbohydrate enriched foodstuffs. Luckily they had an Amish market in Germantown when I lived there, so I didn't have to go all the way up there. Damn I'm getting hungry.

Seneca Valley / Northwest Alum here.

Yes, the Amish Marketplace restaurant or whatever it is is still there, and according to Animallyson, it is the sheetz.   Geomoose, I believe, has long lauded the claims of the Amish making the best pretzels in all of existence...so I have to make my way there, being that I live oh so close.

Haven't been to a Starvin Marvin's, but with your recommendation I'll have to stop in for a slice.  There is so little good food around these suburban parts, so I always hit up on what people like.

I don't ever remember Lakeforest Mall having a movie theater...are you sure that you are not confusing it with Montgomery Mall.  There is a theater there and right next door there was/is a little arcade.  I don't know if the arcade is still there to tell you the truth, and I was just over at that Mall buying my little girl some shoes from Nordstrom's.

Yeah, they had a movie theater.  It was where the food court is now, and the arcade was right next to it.  Keep in mind that this was circa 1995, so things were much different back then.

As for Starvin Marvin's, just don't be put off by the guy on the phone sounding rude if he does.  When my wife and I ordered from there, it never seemed like the guy was writing anything down, but we never got the food wrong.  My fave was a philly steak n' cheese.

I'm still hungry, FWIW.

i live in baltimore myself. its pretty funny seeing how many locals are on here. the very first person i got a trade request from was in ellicot city-i was slightly tempted just to drive over and stick his game in his mailbox myself. on a slightly unrealated note have any of you guys played tony hawks proving ground yet? three of the levels are in baltimore (downtown, the harbor, and the old lansdowne skatepark). the rest are split between DC and philly. i gotta say as a local the game was worth buying just to skate in that waterfall/fountain/sculpture by harborplace.

I have been up there a few times. great food!

And just to let you know, I am one of those urban people, hahaha. I live in the most urban 'burb of DC, to be honest, by choice. I'm one block out of DC, hahaha. I dig it-I don't need a car here.

Raised in Takoma Park, tons of arcades back in the day in Silver Spring.  I try not to go to the Pike it is so busy.

On another note, having another meetup.  Check out the thread in this forum.
