I wish my annual subscription to GS hadn't auto-renewed a couple of months ago. It pains me to have financially supported a company that would do this to its employees and supporters.

I imagine that you auto-renewed with a credit card.  Call your credit card company and I would complain so much about the company, your credit card company might reverse the charges on that particular charge or at the very minimum give you back a pro-rated amount.

UPDATE: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6183603.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=newstop&tag=newstop;title;1

Gamespot has said that Eidos had no influence on the reviewing process and that internal problems caused Jeff to lose his job.

I think that we are going a little crazy. The crazyness has died down and Gamespot is still a good site.

It's the parent company CNET we need to be angry at.

Gamespot writes great reviews and I love to read their news, watch tournament tv, listen to the hotspot, etc.

It's a great site and losing Jeff is horrible to it but don't stop going to it if you enjoyed it before.

The reviewers there had nothing to do with it.

I for one, will keep going to the site. Even though the mood there might not be so good anymore....

*Sigh* JEFFF!!!!!

And I'm sure they're being completely honest about it and not trying to cover their heinous mistake in any way. Confused

Precisely. I believe the comments from his fellow employees' blogs more than the very company that is basically paid by Eidos.

I don't pay for a Gamespot subscription, but I do visit the site often to read and write reviews.  Someone mentioned Gamerankings.com earlier in this thread and I have to agree that for reviews and other game related info, this is a great resource.  As far as reviews go, I read as many as I can, then I read player reviews, which Gamespot has many.

I still don't know all the details, but this firing is disappointing.  It won't alter my behavior as far as which sites I goto for reviews, but it sure will make me question Gamespot's management and possibly their relationship with developers/publishers.

Does anybody else see the irony in the fact that GameSpot's review of Tabula Rasa knocks the game for having blatant in-game advertising? Wow.. Pot, meet Kettle.

in-game advertising doesn't bother me so much if it's billboards or virtual commercials playing in the background. What would bother me more are still-screen shots of products or full-motion video that takes up the full screen and detracts from the game experience. If they want to have a futuristic Mountain Dew machine in the next Metroid game, I could live with that as long as the next Mario game doesn't have a two minute video for McDonald's during the cut scenes or something. I also believe that in-game advertising SHOULD make the games cheaper too, much as Gametap has done recently with free services and such.

I agree. And, although it's a little off-topic, I hate, Hate, HATE being forced to sit through 30 minutes of commercials at the theater before a movie starts. I paid my $10 to see the movie. So why am I being made to sit through commercials? In my opinion, if I have to watch 30 minutes of ads that I can't fast forward through, the movie should be free.

I completely agree, with all the blatant commercials in games and before movies we should be given a break, another thing that kills me is the product placement. It really drives me a bit batty.

GameSpot means business now, huh?  This was a message.  This was GameSpot informing the makers of Tabula Rasa that they haven't gotten their fair cut of the in-game advertising.

Big Smile

The sad part is, that is probably an accurate assessment. NCsoft could probably buy themselves a higher rating.

I don't really mind most in-game advertising.  I think in a lot of game-types it actually makes the game more realistic without detracting from the gameplay.  I would much rather see signage for Mt. Dew, Nike, and UnderArmor in the stadiums of a Madden game than a bunch of corney made-up ads put there to just represent real-world advertising.   This is especially true for me in the case where the advertisement is an iconic part of the location being represented - ie. the Citgo and John Hancock signs at Fenway.

Yes the revenue generated by in-game ads should definitely reduce the cost to the consumer.  But with the massivly increasing development costs involved in game production, I think we also need to realize that game costs won't be going down.  In fact, I find it rather suprising that we don't have higher priced games that we do today.  Granted the typical game price has increased to $59.99 for the 360 and the PS3... but in the grand scheme of things that's a pretty low increase when you consider that Genesis and SNES games typically cost $49.99 (I even remember paying $79.99 retail for both Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 3) and that was 15 years ago... which if you look at it in another way, is nearly exactly on par with the generally accepted 3% annual cost of living/inflation increase.

That's what they would like for you to believe and think...but remember that the manufacturing and raw material cost of producing a game CARTRIDGE are significantly higher than pressing cd-roms, dvd-roms, and even the slightly costlier Blu-Ray discs.  So it's not exactly an apples for apples discussion.
