I want to like this game. The graphics are fantastic and the scenery is breathtaking (sometimes to a fault; sewers and dungeons shouldn't look like paradise). But frankly, the story is boring and forced, and the dialogue is atrocious. I never thought I'd say this about an RPG, but there are way too many cutscenes, and they are too long.
I always wished for more cutscenes in RPGs because they really propel the story. Now I'm sorry I did. I'm about 10 hours into this game and I'm pretty sure I'm going to give up on it.
Well, it'll be a quick 1,000 points for you then!
So, I just heard about this gameabout 2 minutes ago. I can't believe that I never heard of it before that. It looks amazing. I'm really interested in the story. It seems pretty original. I just wish it would come available so I could actually get it and play it.
Looks like I may have to wait for it but at least that will give me time to get Bioshock.
I played the demo and liked it so much that I played it a second time through. I have it on my request list and can't wait to play. It is very original and I liked the combat system. The story seems different, too. I don't really mind cutscenes, but I can see how too many can interrupt the fun of the game.
This is the next J-RPG I am going to sink my teeth into. I finished Blue Dragon a while back and wanted to get to this one before I played Lost Odyssey. I will be really pleased if it is better than Blue Dragon, especially the story. Since it isn't dealing with children ("I won't give up") I know it will be a little better.
personally i find the story and gameplay sooo boring compared to Blue Dragon.. I am forcing myself to finish the game though.

I hate to break it to you but you won't be escaping children in this game. Some of the voices are on the level of Maromaro as far as being high-pitched and grating. Eternal Sonata is beautiful and I think does a fantastic job representing a dreamscape created in Chopin's mind. I found the tactical elements in the battles satisfying as well. On the down side I found the RPG elements rather shallow. The game is extremely linear and there is practically no customization of the characters. I don't see how people keep comparing Eternal Sonata to Blue Dragon. Eternal Sonata simply stands alone. Personnally, I have been enjoying Blue Dragon much more than I did Eternal Sonata. I may be a bit biased however. I did enjoy Eternal Sonata's beauty, its musical connections, and the history surrounding Chopin. I am glad it was a "short" game though.
The game is gorgeous, but boring and preachy. And to get the majority of the acheivements, it must be played through twice.
I totally agree. I found the story to be alright but not the best. Cut scenes can be too long but you do have the option to skip. That's good if this is your second playthrough or you died already before a scene.
I really did like the battle system too. I do not like that according to mygamercard.net, 77% of the achievements can be gained on the first playthrough but only net you below 400.
I've started on my second playthrough but it is harder, well since I am not the best at blocking and early on, you're screwed if you are back attacked.

Agreed. See also Xenosaga.
I've only played the demo myself, but I am looking forward to the real thing. It is indeed gorgeous -- in an unusual step, the combat character models seem to be just as richly detailed as the "field" ones; it also has some really nice music (natch). It also, even in the demo, has the most delightfully morbid ..."feeling"... running through it which stands in stark contrast to all the overblown cuteness, enough to make it bearable and brinng things down to earth.
Granted, I can wait until I have more free time and the cost comes down a tad, but I plan to set aside some serious quality time for this puppy.

I don't think the problem with Eternal Sonata was the number of cutscenes so much as the length of each. They were incredibly long and drawn out, with frequent rambling and repetition within each.
