Not major standouts here, but I enjoy:

Kingdom of Paradise (Samurai action RPG)

Untold Legends (classic action-rpg)

Valkyrie Profile:  Lenneth

Not like any RPG out there, the puzzle/rpg hybrid Puzzle Quest is fun and highly addictive.  I've poured hours and hours into it.

Here is a list of some rpgs that I looked up recently and in no particular order:

  1. Jeanne D'Arc - Turn-base straegy rpg (sorry don't remember the term). Fast pace, good graphics, great story. (gamerankings score: 86.180%)

  2. Brave Story: New Traveler - Turn base rpg. Fast-pace, good graphics, decent storyline, funny conversations, short load times, easy battle system, linear, ton of random encounters (though you get an ability further into the game where you can avoid weak enemies), party member duo/trio attacks, main character is a runt and the outfit looks stupid. (gamerankings score: 78.53%)

  3. Tales of Eternia - Turn Base rpg. I never played, it's sitting on my shelf (gamerankings score: 84.31%)

  4. Crisis Core - I never played, but if you liked the Final Fantasy story or something, this is the prequel to VII (gamerankings score: 81.80%)

  5. Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony - Western hack and slash rpg. Faster pace than the Untold Legends series. Better gameplay and it's not as long. I forgot how long the load times are. (gamerankings score: 74.758%)

  6. Disgaea - Turn-base strategy RPG (sorry don't remember the term) (gamerankings score: 87.877%)

  7. Breath of Fire III - I don't know if there is a difference between the PS1 version and the PSP version. Worth a look if you ever played the series or something. (gamerankings score: 70.886%)

  8. Wild Arms XF - turn-base strategy rpg (I think). (gamerankings score: 69.028%)

  9. Monster Hunter Freedom - You get to hunt dinosaurs and dragon type creatures. Big seller in Japan. It starts off a bit slow, but does pick up. I know there is coop play over ad hoc, but nothing over wifi. (gamerankings score: 71.289%)

  10. Monster Hunter Freedom 2 - Same as above but more content. (gamerankings score: 72.526%)

  11. Star Ocean: First Departure - Remake of the classic snes game. (gamerankings score: 84.667%)

  12. Yggdra Union - It just came out so I have no clue. But the graphics look nice and the reviews have been favorable. (gamerankings score: 77.267%)

  13. Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth - I forget if it is a port or a remake. (gamerankings score: 80.604%)

  14. Riviera - Read some reviews and look at some screenshots, I forgot what was good about this game. (gamerankings score: 66.3%)

  15. Final Fantasy Tactics - Remake/port of the original. Bit slow though (gamerankings score: 87.965%)

There are a few more, but I don't remember them anymore.

I could honestly strangle pcktlnt for ignoring what I feel is the best series currently out on PSP

Legend Of Heroes I - III are must plays if you love classic J-RPG games. The first game is ultimately the best out of the 3, with 2 being rather boring, but essential to the story arc.  3 was also a great game, and is almost up to par with 1, and does feature characters from both the first 2 games, which was nice.

And Tales Of Eternia is an action-rpg, not turn based. :P

You also have the remakes of Final Fantasy I & II out there, that are worth looking at if you are fans of the series.

I'd have to second Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony. When I had my PSP, that is the game that got all the use out of it. Pretty standard hack n' slasher, lots of fun.

I have a quarterly handheld RPG review feature I do over at RPGWatch.com - it is up to #11 at this point, and that one is supposed to be up today or so.

I agree and disagree with some of the games listed, but none strenuously ... and don't have time now to detail them all.  You can check out those articles - I have looked at *every* DS & PSP RPG released in the US, and also all of the GBA RPG's in the last few years.

As for Dungeon Siege, that is my fave of the 'action-RPG' genre on the PSP, but the load times are ~1 minute - and I played it again recently on the PSP-2000 and they are still horrific.  It really takes away from a decent game.

Brave Story: New Traveler is the best of the 'Final Fantasy' types, I like Dungeon Make for the 'build your own' idea, also like D&D Tactics for the combat system and not much else, like the utter chart of the 'Legend of Heroes' series but find them forgettable, and find that the FF 1 & 2 offer nothing worth choosing them over the GBA release.

If you played the 'Broken World' expansion to Dungeon Siege II (which, unfortunately, was pretty mediocre compared to the main game) you can interchange codes between the games for special items and such.
