This is an experiment ... there have been hints at people wanting to start discussing this whole thing, but we've kept it off-limits.  But now there is a place!  Say what you want to say, either make points, bring up information, or debate fellow Goozers about politics if you dare.

Ground rules:

- No flaming or other direct or indirect personal attacks.

- No profanity.

- No racial slurs.

- In general, think before you post, keep it civil!

- Remember that the chances of changing someone's mind are just slightly better than jumping to the moon; so enter with a desire for fun and open discussion, not to change the world.

im pushing for McCain because he is from Arizona and i've meet him and he really is a cool guy, plus from what i've heard (not to much) i don't really like Obama and i will not be voting though because i really am not that educated on the matter and im not a really vocal non-supporter of Bush and not a supporter of him either.

Personally when i wanted to vote i couldn't because of age and Bush won over Al Gore, and then Clinton got beat by Obama again before i could vote.

Edit: Next time we need to vote for Hilary so we can get Bill in office again! Stick out tongue

Here are some controversial thoughts:

- Anyone who supported Hilary Clinton in the primaries claiming it to be based on her view on issues and is now supporting McCain is either confused, a racist or sexist.

- There are many folks who will not vote for Obama because of the color of his skin.  That isn't what troubles me - my problem is with how many of them are dishonest about it.

- There are quite a few folks supporting McCain because they think Palin is 'hawt'.  Again that is fine ... just be honest.

- Anyone thinking that McCain is free of the Bush/Cheney reins needn't look further than the way Palin was handled and over-managed in the weeks pre-debate ... and compare it to the names and methods used in keeping the Bush administration in near total secrecy from 2001 - 2003.

- Folks equate Republican with Conservative and Democrat with Liberal.  That is fine ... but when looking at the last 20 years it is pretty clear that the most *fiscally* conservative years were 1992-2000.  (and I really can't stand Bill Clinton now or then).

"when looking at the last 20 years it is pretty clear that the most *fiscally* conservative years were 1992-2000." (sorry, my quote button's broken) Now is that because of which party was in the White House, or is it because of the relationship between the White House and Congress (and their respective parties)? And to be sure, when one party controls everything, they like to spend money on their programs regardless of spending philosophy.

I might be tempted to participate but I think defending my views would probably be exhausting. With my brain fried from too much psychology homework, I'll just lurk for now.

As I stated, I have no love for Bill Clinton, and don't rate him very high in general ... but he made balanced budgets, shrinking government, increasing transparency, and attempting to flatten the tax rates a priority.  And it worked - at least partially because the 'Republican Revolution' couldn't well be seen as fiscally outspending someone they had characterized as a 'tax & spend' liberal ... he sort of shamed them into doing it.

I saw something on the news where a conservative made the point that long gone are the days where the natural link between Republican and Conservative exists ... the core is much more focused on religious fundamentalism and everything else is secondary ...

Being from Scotland I find the link between Christianity and the Republicans really strange. No one seems to question it. I'm not much of a holy person but Christianity is based around loving your neighbor regardless of differences, turning the other cheek and helping the poor. The republican ethos seems to be about intolerance (regarding gay people and immigrants), in favor of the death penalty and allowing you to make as much money as you want regardless of the suffering of those around you.

It just doesn't make sense that if your faith was the most important thing to you, you would choose John McCain, who has only recently started attending church) over Obama, whose faith is obviously important to him.

To be honest I would vote for Nader whose heart definitely seems to be in the right place and thankfully keeps his religious beliefs to himself

Either way we are screwed.  The economy is going down the toilet, the nation as a whole is more in debt than ever before (Side note: The average person now lives 1% BELOW their means), nobody can afford to fill up their cars, and we are in a war that will last forever.

(Side note: The war in the middle east has always and will always exist due to the nature of the religions in the region.  Anyone who says it has been about anything other than religion - including money, power, and oil - should not look to the past several years of US involvement, but to the history of the region and culture to know that truth.)

Neither candidate knows how to solve all four problems without sacrificing at least two of them.  I don't know if anybody can.

For that reason, I would like to petition Goozex to open shipping to Nicaragua, where as a U.S citizen I can move to and not pay taxes for 10 years (business or personal) if I open a tourist business.  Anybody want to buy some jewlery made by a local Nicaraguan like myself???

(Side note: Palin looks like Peggy Hill, but she's still a VPILF in my book.)

cbyler:
The war in the middle east has always and will always exist due to the nature of the religions in the region.

The difference is that we took the 'Bush Doctrine' of not just pre-emptive strikes, but preventative strikes - taking on those based on a percieved possible future threat ... and ended up in an easily predictable quagmire.  The war in the middle east is about religion, but our involvement is about money, family, power and oil.

One thing I would like - to see McCain stop talking about 'the surge' and come out and say 'we were wrong to start this war and have thousands of Americans and tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis killed because of the greed and hubris of Bush and his authoritarian regime capitalizing on post-911 hysteria'.  And then talk about how he will deconstruct that regime while simultaneously having many of the same people on his campaign staff ...

cbyler:
but she's still a VPILF in my book

When they showed the high school pictures of her, my wife and I talked about how they looked like our yearbooks ... and for good reason since she is our age.  ... and I had to look up the Peggy Hill reference...

Where's the thread that discusses BlackCoyote's quest to become Ruler of Goozex?  I thought this might be it, but I was wrong.

I find myself probably voting for the person I dislike less. And I dislike both candidates. I would have voted for Hilary Clinton in a heartbeat, but not Obama.

Eight years ago the media was in love with George W. Bush and told the world that Al Gore was a bore. There was something about Bush I just didn't like. I could not put my finger on it, but I just did not like him. My gut proved to be right.

I have that same feeling about Barack Obama. He is no doubt capable and will hopefully be a good President (I think he would have to curse Jesus pu
