Grenadier:

As for Colonization, there's good news....

That's really cool. That'll be a week 2/3 purchase for me (that's when Firaxis games tend to go on sale after release).

I like Colonization also nowadays I am playing a new indie game named Invasion. It is similar to Civilization. I liked it too but it's AI is a bit hard, to download it and try : www.ozangumus.com/demo.html

Hmm, a spiritual successor to Colonization? I may just have to try that out. Thanks for the link!

Not important friend, we are also waiting for Col2 till November, it is announced.

Yeah, I saw the Civ IV mod the other day as well. Looks promising but nothing will ever recapture the spirit of the original.

I like Advance Wars, but c'mon I'd hardly call it the "best TBS".  It was made to be easy to learn and not very deep.

On the other hand, I'm a big supporter of Alpha Centauri for best TBS ever.  The game was simply phenomenal in terms of strategic depth and while it had its problems, like graphics and music, it was one of the only TBS games that I have ever seen attempt any real semblance of a story.  The Heart of Darkness thing it had going was actually kind of interesting.

I am all about Alpha Centauri. I really wish they were re-making that. Not that I'm disappointed with a Colonization re-make, but Alpha Centauri would have been even better.

The very first Mechwarrior game (although it wasn't called that) was turnbased and holds a special place in my heart.

Hmmm....Not sure if the Total War Series would qualify as TBS, but as a person who prefers TBS games, Rome, Medieval and Medieval 2 top my list.  But you can not discount the Civ (currently playing the heck out of some Civ IV) series nor can you the X-Com.

I have often believed that the gaming industry is going down the tubes with all this RTS crap (in the humble opinion of this old gamer).  I have played them all and I have never found one that I like.  Even the new Sins of a Solar Empire.  You just can not beat a good Turn Based Strategy Game.

I applaud Firaxis for keeping the Turn Based Genre alive.

Even though Ive been trying to get into Blue Dragon, I havent the stomach for turn based RPG,s, they bore the hell out of me. Not to mention  RPG's of almost any kind, aside from the Bioware ones.

Turn based RPG and Turn Based Strategy games are two different breeds of games. Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey are examples of turn based RPG's. Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics would be examples of turn based strategy RPG's.

I would definitely go for:

- Civ II or IV

- X-COM

-I also love HoMM III and V (with expansions) and Silent Storm (and some of the games made using its' engine like Night Watch - not high quality but I like it anyway)

Robstein:
Bioshock goes well beyond being a mere "great game". Bioshock is the virtual embodiment of awesomeness.

Well, I look at it this way: Bioshock is inferior to both games it is 'spiritual successor' to (System Shock 1 & 2), only average as a shooter, lacking in real choices, and generally lacking real gameplay depth ... yet it is a really well done narrative with a choice guaranteed to tug at heartstrings of parents in particular (though it is an obvious ploy).  I wouldn't say it is terrible, but neither is it one of the greatest games of all time.

So many to choose from.  X-com, pretty much any Civ game, Talonsoft's Campaign or Battleground series wargames.

I'm surprised no one has said Steel Panthers: World At War or Steel Panthers: Main Battle Tank... especially since they are both free downloads from Matrix and Shrapnel games respectively.
