A good turn based indie game I've been playing is Armageddon Empires. It's part customizable card game part hexagon turn based strategy (don't worry, you don't have to buy "cards"). It's a solid game and well worth the $30 purchase. I think they have a demo as well. The interface is a little klunky but once you figure it out it's a lot of fun. Plus the developer has released two updates for it with additional rules, cards, etc.
