360 is out of my price range, but may be able to obtain an original XBox. Is the original XBox still supported online, and if so, are there games out there that people are still playing actively online?

Though the 360 is seemingly in full swing, the great majority of 360 games do not have an online community presence. You can name the games on one hand that you can quickly and easily get matched up with online. I haven't played any Xbox 1 games on Live recently, but I am confident that the Halo 2 community is still strong....in re: to the other games, I doubt it...but you can always invite people to play. And of course, many Xbox 1 games are b.c. on the 360, so that is always an option. Anyhow, if you can get a system cheaply, I would suggest it...as there is a great deal to play...and you can always "demo" the live service to see if it is still active enough for you.

Battlefield Modern Combat is still around and active. Rainbow 6 3/Black Arrow are still active. Star Wars Battlefront 2 has a few still on. Of course Halo 2. All fun games...all fun games I still play. I have two xbox and two copies of all the games.

Saying that the number of Xbox 360 games with an active online community can be counted on one hand is Sony Fanboyism at its best. At any given moment there are THOUSANDS of Halo 2 and Halo 3 games being played, Crackdown has fun co-op that's nearly constant, Gears of War has countless players, even older and less popular games like Blacksite: Area 51, The Darkness, and Quake 4 (all known for crap multiplayer) all have games going on constantly. That's just a tiny quick example I'm using because if games like The Darkness still have players online, you won't need to worry about any of your AAA games having long waits! ;)
ORIGINAL Xbox titles, however, can be a little more difficult. It sort of depends on the game itself. See, thanks to Xbox Live, servers can be decentralized (making one of the Xbox's a host). So if the game went solely through the live service, it's not a problem, you can connect up, start hosting, and you're bound to have a game up and going in no time (even Street Fighter II Anniversary Edition still has 20-60 matches going at any given moment, match making doesn't take long when a fight is over in a matter of minutes). SOME games do rely on a centralized server (mostly EA titles like the Need For Speeds or Madden games). Most of these games are actually still online, but the oldest of them may have been pulled to make way for newer gen games, that was up to the developers, though, not Microsoft / Xbox Live.
Halo 2 is for the original Xbox, and it sets up games via Xbox Live. It feeds data out to a server owned by Bungie (the game's developers). Here's an up to the minute stat from the Halo 2 servers:

Looks to me like even the original Xbox community is still alive and kicking pretty well. ;)

Have to agree with that reply. We own the original XBOX (one day I'll get the 360) and we play HALO 2 every night, although we do see a dramatic decrease in the number of players, i.e. the same players on a string of matches. MechWarrior 2 *seems* to be active, but is very small. Same goes for DOA 3. I wish someone still played Destroy All Monster Melee, though.....

Yeah, it is, but some games have dropped out.
I think Burnout Revenge is out for the count, since whenver I try to play online it says Xbox live is not available.
I haven't checked in a while, but seeing as how the game was released on the 360 as well, it might be possible.
I recently sent out my Xbox game, CounterStrike. I played it before i sent it out and there was plenty of people on it. I got into a game so quickly. I have an xbox360 by the way. The graphics are no where near the 360's, but its good gameplay. It doesn't have any modes in the game besides Online play and going against AI if you don't have Xbox live.
