I'll get my first and largest qualm with this game out of the way right now:  While you may spend hours playing this game, you'll spend about half of that time waiting for it to load.  Load times are next to constant, with the PSP loading during almost every action short of walking around.  Still, the load times take a few mere seconds and if you can bear with that, the game is an enjoyable enough experience and a good addition to the popular series.  Another small nitpick is the loss of the time progression option, which can make several tasks in game a bit tiresome as your Sim moves through the same actions (such as showering or going to bed) repeatedly.  Still, there's enough to do and enough options to reduce the necessity of many such menial tasks.

With the transition over to PSP, the Sims 2 remains true to it's predecessors, retaining several elements that made it popular, including the furnishing of your home, the upkeep of your Sim, and the development of relationships (which are developed through a mini topic-match game).  New elements are introduced, mainly an ongoing storyline that also takes your character through several small side-quests that provide you with cash or perks.  To earn cash, your Sim also has the option of playing minigames, which, in accordance with the level of your Sim's abilities, affect your promotion and ultimately how much cash you make.

Graphics are good enough, not as smooth as say, the Sims 2 PC release, but above par with the graphics of the original games.  Audio is nothing special, with the sound catching now and again and leaving you in silence, interrupted by the occassional senseless babbel of the Sims around you.  Controls are easy enough as you guide your Sim from a third-person perspective and have the option to zoom in or out.

Other elements not present include marriage (replaced with the option of roomates) and unlimited furnishings of your home (apparently, you have a huge house, yet if you hit a certain furnishing limit it "affects your Feng Shui" and you cannot add any more unless you sell something).  All in all, it's a fun game if you want something slow-paced but still enjoyable.

Nice to know, I was considering getting this. Would you happen to know anything about Sims Pets?

Late reply: No, I'm afraid I haven't played that one yet.

I found this game to be nothing like the original and extremely boring. Loading times are ridiculous and really ruin whatever fun was in the game.
