Ouendan is a very upbeat, mostly straightforward title. Even if you have to play alongside a translation FAQ from Gamefaqs, the icons used to navigate through the game should be recognizable to the average DS player.

If you've played Elite Beat Agents, then you'll immediately get into the gist of this game. EBA was a remake of this game, and both have interesting scenarios that deem a look at both titles.

The Hit Markers that are essentially the game play require precise tapping of the DS stylus in rhythm and in sequential order. Most stages will require multiple attempts in order to be completed, but the lively action & rhythm make it interesting and not a chore.

Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan is a very likable game and great for road trips, quick gaming sessions, and everything in between.

Translation guides are available on Gamefaqs.com if needed, but the game can still be enjoyed through the animations in the manga panels.

A very nice summary of the game, having played both EBA and both Ouendan games there's not much I can add. Just agreement over the fact that knowing Japanese is not at all needed for the enjoyment of this game. Each stage is a different song, and accompanying each new song is a scenario where the Ouendan, a cheering squad, will have to help someone (or someones) through a crisis of some sort. These scenarios are quite basic to understand. For instance, the first stage features a would-be college student studying hard for his entrance exams, and depending on how well you perform on the stage, his family will help or hinder him. This can all be understood quite clearly without being able to read the text.

Menus are also easily understood. The icon with one person is single player mode, with multiple people is multiplayer mode. In selecting difficulty, the higher the flame next to the text, the harder the difficulty, etc.

There are a few things you should know about this game, however, before you pick it up. First off, if the concept of an all male cheering squad cheering people up so they can perform well in everyday activities sounds a bit weird, well that's because it is. Ouendan's quirkiness is part of its charm, though. Just don't be surprised when an old race horse has to capture a thief on a motorcycle.

Another thing that might bother people is the Japanese. No, not the text, we went through that being simple to understand. Remember, this is a RHYTHM game. Rhythm games have music. A Japanese rhythm game would have Japanese music, right? I know a few friends I've showed this game to, who would like this game just based on gameplay, but can't get over the "weird" Japanese music. If you're not into, or at least accepting of, J-Rock and J-Pop, you might be better off playing Elite Beat Agents. (Lucky anime fans, we're already used to Japanese music!)

All in all, I would give this game 3 thumbs up... if I had 3 thumbs, and its sequel is even better. And remember- you are going to get stuck on songs. Don't worry. Keep playing, eventually you'll pass. (Though Ready Steady Go on hard might tempt you to chuck your DS! A word of advice: Don't. Stick out tongue)
