With the up coming price drops of the 360 (http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2007/07/31/circuit-city-ad-confirms-360-price-drop-on-all-models/) I was thinking about getting the Core system. My only issue with just getting the core system is that I wonder "is it enough" Do I need the hard drive space? Etc etc. Those of you with the core system do you regret getting it because you really found yourself needing the premium/elite systems? Which version of the 360 is just enough!?
I think like anything it depends on what you plan to do - honestly I would never consider the core because I think it is too limiting. If you plan to make much use of XBLA and Live and so on you will end up needing the storage.

The core may be enough for you...if you just want to play the games, and could care less about the digital downloads. But I actually think that the core may be a great idea as you may be able to pick up a 20gb 360 HD on the cheap in the coming months as people will be upgrading and trading HDs in. A lot of the local trade-in places separate the 360 HD from the rest of the trade-in. I picked up a HD off of Ebay for less than $45 months back, and I imagine that it goes for less now. So the Core may be enough...you will also have to pick up component cables, if you need them for HD, as it only comes with composite cables. Also, I have seen deals for memory cards if that is all the space that you need.
The big difference outside of what has thus far been stated is the chrome faceplate for the disc drive...but you can get great chrome faceplates from places like Play-Asia.....outside of this, the sucker looks the same. Oh yes, there is one other thing...a corded controller. Not a big deal for me, as I still play my PS3 corded as well. Just used to being chained to my console since the NES era.

Id have to say, but a Core system, then go on Ebay and get a 20G HDD cheap from someone who upgraded. Of course wait for the price drop coming in the next week or two.
There's no way I would buy a core system due to the lack of online capability and the corded controller. I love my freedom and my XBLA too much. But that's just me.

Oh I agree, you MUST have the HDD. My first 360 was a Core (I bought the HDD seperate at the same time). It lasted me until the Elite launched. I traded it in for the Elite while it was still working. Supposedly the ROD issues have ben fixed on the Elites.
I wouldt trade XBL for ANYTHING! I love people who use the "free online" as a reason to chose a PS3 over a 360. Ouch, .14 cents a day too much?
Are you going to be gaming in HD? As I recall, the Core doesn't come with HD cabling like the Premium or the Elite. Also, besides the hard drive and wireless controller, you won't get the microphone for speaking/trash talking on live. The Core doesn't seem like a very good deal for only $70 less than the Premium ($349 vs. $279).
No it doesnt come with component cables. As I stated, I bought a Core at launch and bought everything seperately that day.It wound up costing me ALOT more afrer the HDD, headset, component cables, wireless controllers.
If you can afford it, the Elite is the best bet after the price drop.
I can’t say enough how great a wireless control is. The controller wires were always just long enough so I had to sit on the edge of the couch and lean forward to play. The wire less controller is great; I can sit where ever and be comfortable while playing. The difference in value for what you get with the Premium over the Core will be worth the extra $70. The HD cables, Headset, HDD, wireless control, free month of Live and even the Ethernet cable. I think it would be tough to get these things for $70 even on the cheep.

It sounds like I cannot get away with getting just the core. I think I will hold off completely now seeing all the issues saying you should have a hdtv to play xbox360 correctly.

I played on a standard definition TV before upgrading and didn't have any problems at all. Sure, it's nicer to game on a HDTV but I don't think it's a necessity.
I also don’t think that a HD set is a necessity, games look awesome with one. Now you can get a good HD set for under a grand even less depending on size. It is up to you if you want to wait; if you wait until fall the 360’s should all have the 65nm chip in them and be more reliable.

Also, I got my 42" Westinghouse at Best Buy for $899
