Can bunnies get hurt?

Everybody loves going to a good party, but is this a good party game?

Story:
What story? Your not actually wanting to play this game for the story are you? This isn’t your run of the mill side scrolling, isometric, 3D game. This is a party game and is ment to be played as a collection of mini games and/or with friends. If I could just summarize the story and why it’s good it would be: THE BUNNIES. The character rayman can be dressed up and made different from like granny clothes to a hip/hop look but the variety of bunnies with their crazy looking eyes and off putting screams makes the so called story enjoyable.

Gameplay:
Single player with remote and nunchuk required.
So any of you who are still hunting down those spare nunchuks in hope of playing with other people are out of luck because each player needs a complete remote and nuchuk set.

Game play can be pretty much summarized as: very varied.

Before each challenge the controls are explained. The clever way to also explain the controls is by a giant bunny with remote and nunchuk in hand showing you the general movements of the game. If there is a specific movement or button that is needed, the camera will zoom into the bunnies hands to show you that control movement. Nothing like a giant bunny showing you how to play games.

There are games where you just shake the controller up and down like your running with you hands. These games are like milking a cow or trying to row a train cart as fast as possible to it will send the super bunny as far as possible.

There aren’t as many games I’ve come across that need to swing the controller over you head like a remote. I was hoping there would be more but the only one I’ve come across is the cow toss. Even then, the cow toss is pretty easy if you have good timing, but just swinging something over your head extremely fast can be very taxing after playing for hours straight.

*****Spoilers**** If there was one
The boss battles are of the first person shooter with plunger variety or the wart hog racing type. The first person shooter is on rails so it’s more like the old school shooters where you don’t actually control where you move but only aim. The aiming is very responsive with using a cross hair and shooting bunnies from the distance should not be hard. The nice addition of getting better shots and even head shots is fantastic. You can actually stick a plunger on a bunnies head and he will be stunned and look around waiting for his doom.

The nice addition of a melee attack is nice as you can grab a bunny close by and use it to knock over other bunnies for multiple combo hits. Sticking a plunger to a bunny’s face while holding him is very funny. The added touch of bunnies crying because you have them captive in you mechanical arm is also a nice touch to see.
******Spoilers*****

There is a large portion of the game dedicated to the rhythm music challenges. There will be a song and to the beat you need to shake either nunchuk or remote when the bunny is to the right or left of rayman. The beat works well and goes with the songs given. Standing up and bouncing to the beat while playing the rhythm games is a blast as you get into the music and especially so if the music is loud. Sure some people might not get into “Girls just wanna have fun” but I believe the hip hop song is “OPP you know me”. Since I’m horrible at naming music, it would have been nice if before the stage started it had a guitar hero title pop up that said something like “Girls just wanna have fun made famous by Cindy Loper:” Although not altogether necessary as the beats will be similar but if your like me I need to hear some lyrics to get into the groove.

Then the obscure ones are like flying a giant bat to pick up some pigs and dropping them off is a bit harder to get the hang of as it’s more of the 3D type of game which the casual gamers will have more trouble on. Coordination is a bigger factor as that game isn’t as user friendly as others as the controls for flying a bat aren’t very tight.

Ball labyrinths are pretty self explanatory as you just move your remote so it doesn’t fall into holes. The remote has a certain degree of rotation before any more movement is just wasted. So find the spot where leaning it forward does not make the board tilt anymore is the key to maneuvering the maze.

The hardest game I’ve seen but was able to pass is this maze. I can’t really tell what you’re supposed to move but you’re to drag this small looking ball through a dark maze looking from the top side. Hitting the walls will make you drop the ball/item. The hardest part is getting finished before the time limit is up. Good luck to those who need to beat this game as it is by far the hardest game I’ve played so far. The only hint I can give is to take the short cut at the very end.

The flying rings challenge I believe was in a Mario game and pretty much you’re dropped from the sky and you have to follow a string of rings and get to the bottom before time runs out. There is a very good sense of speed and of the majority of the challenges are in a static frame. This is one of the challenges with more freedom of movement but will also infuriate many players as it is lots more challenging then say the jump rope challenge.

The one game that didn't work well is the one where you have to close the restroom door on the bunny. Getting to close the 2 outside doors seems not as responsive and makes it near impossible when they start to open all the doors. You can aim right at the door, handle, edge and still not be able to close the door with a high success rate. Of all the games, this is the only game that didn't work 100%.

Other quirky games are slapping bunnies coming out of holes with a shovel, jumping rope, drawing the outline of the food, bunny bowling, and slapping the out of sync choir bunny to name some of the more memorable challenges.

Multiplayer could have been tweaked a bit to allow a easier experience but the developers decided that before you can truly experience the entire party game you need to play it in single player. This is a bit of a drag if you bought this game and have a group of players at your place waiting to go straight into party mode. The total single player game to just blow right though it should not take more then 15 hours. The levels are broken up so you don’t have to complete ever single challenge before taking on the main boss. Too many of the games are a wait your turn. It could have been very easy to do a split screen for some games and on games where everyone can fit in the same window to just mark off each characters color as an indicator. You don’t get that sense of party abuse, where other players abuse each other like in Mario party. The fun of party games is to make your opponent screw up while you win. Only games that are unlocked in first person profile will be available through the scores mode. And there are about 70 mini games but lots of those are just different songs or different stages of the same game. It doesn’t have 70 all unique games even though there are a lot that are different. The Challenges mode is only unlocked AFTER you have beaten the single player all the way through.

Online mode - What online mode?
Okay so there is a online rankings for the world for total and per minigame. At least you can kind of determine if your mojo really is that good in certain games.

Graphics:
Graphics are normal for a gamecube game going off of the standard composite cables.
The graphics are functional and will work well for the games presented. The over all looks is very soft but come off well with allowing the bunnies to look so darn cute.

Pros:
It uses the remote and nunchuk well. The game would not work with a basic controller. There are too many challenges that need both hands. The game goes above and beyond the basic game of operation. This game is a great way to display how games can be played and a perfect way to show off the power of the Nintendo wii. The wii is built on getting people together to play and have fun. This is a nice departure for the rayman series to attempt a party game to force the owner to buy multiple remote and numchuk sets.

Cons:
Not online capable (posting best scores are through codes)
Could use better graphics
No speech, just a bunch of bunnies screaming
Not team based challenges like Mario party. This is not a board game.
Even thought this game is marketed for E for Everyone I don’t think this is a good game for younger kids. There is a ball labyrinth game where the bunny smashes another bunny with a giant club over the head. It’s all cute and all but just keep in mind that there is some bunny beatings in this game.

Recommended:
Yes

Pros
One of the best party games

Cons
Not enough player interaction at the same time

The Bottom Line
The game is best played with others but still enjoyable in single player.

wow, that's an awesome review. I second the comment that it's fun to play single player, but MADE for parties-my friends all love this game.

I was not inclined to rent this game because of the scary (or scared?) bunny on the cover but after reading your very thoughtful and thorough review I think we will try it out.

"Bunny beatings" ... hummm, even saying that right now just makes me chuckle. It sounds like a funny party game that we'll have to invite their cousins over and all just go bunny crazy over.

for sure a family game ;)

but my wife loves the rythem dancing game and i'm partial to shooting bunnies in the face with a plunger or slapping them if they are out of key in the chorus.  thanks for reading !

Glad that you all liked the game in single-player mode.  I might just have to pick this up.  I was enthralled with the idea of the game when I first heard about it, but it fell to the way-side in terms of purchasing it.  I'm a gaming loser who has no friends who want to game, so multi-player is out for me.

Hmm.. this game has been sitting on my shelf, unplayed, for the last couple of months. Perhaps it's time to actually try it out.
