Anyone else eagerly awaiting this game? I'm a huge Advance Wars fan, and while I'm nervous about the art/style change I am going to be picking this game up day one regardless. The addition of wifi is great, but I'm curious to see how it's implemented. Anyone who's played multiplayer Advance Wars before can attest to just how long battles can play out for. I don't know if I have that much time to commit to a match, so hopefully there are 'chess by email' options available.

The game comes out on the 21st/22nd this month so I'll be picking my copy up alongside Burnout Paradise (360).

I've never really been a huge Advance Wars fan, but I'll probably give it a try anyway. I love turn-based tactics games but the series has always seemed a bit too watered down for me. Give me supply lines and formations on a hex-grid any day of the week.

multiplayer should only be for very small maps. I don't think the majority of gamers have that kind of time necessary to play through a normal sized map.

I guess it's still better than playing civilization online through in 1 sitting.

Field Commander (an Advance Wars clone) on the PSP had an excellent multiplayer mode called 'Transmission'. It was basically the 'chess by email' mode that I'm hoping Advance Wars has. Basically, you'd fire up your PSP, and login to the multiplayer menu. Then, after selecting the game you wanted (you could have up to 5 concurrent games) you would take your turn. after you finished your moves would be saved to Sony's servers where your opponent could then retrieve them and take their turn.

This process repeated back and forth and made it easy to wage an extended war with a friend while not having to remain glued to your psp. In my experience, battles took weeks with only one or two turns made per day. A friend and I had multiple battles going at the same time and all was good until somehow the data got corrupted and we were never able to finish our games. Sadly, this happened to quite a few people based on the official Field Commander forums.

Regardless though, it was a great way to play a game like Advance Wars against a live opponent without spending hours upon hours locked in battle.

I'm guess it's probably a bit too far fetched, but I'm hoping Days of Ruin does include a similiar type of gameplay, otherwise I doubt I'll ever play a wifi battle.

I've been waiting for this one as well. I loved the gba versions, but I wasn't a huge fan of the last ds version. From what I've read, for this new version, they have done away with the gimmicky things they added for the ds version; namely the things I didn't like, like the tag-team CO deal.

Likewise, the first two GBA versions of Advance Wars were stellar..and I, too, soured on the new innovations of the DS version.  I may be alone in this assessment, outside of the previous poster, as the DS version is still very much coveted.

I'm definitely looking forward to this game. I've really enjoyed all the previous games and am excited about the more "mature" step forward for the series. Never really seemed appropriate to have the "super-happy-sunshine-smiles-we're-going-to-fight-a-war!!!!!-weeeeeeeeeee!!!" attitude the originals had, though as I stated above, I still enjoyed them and liked the art style.

And as the OP said, a "chess by email" would be amazing. I doubt I could get through an online match otherwise....I just don't have the time.

If you're looking for a step away from the "super-happy-sunshine-smiles-we're-going-to-fight-a-war!!!!!-weeeeeeeeeee!!!" attitude I would hold off any bets.  Have you seen some of the CO's?  3 of them are teen girls.  Maybe they have taken steps away from it but I'd be skeptical of how much they've really moved away.

As for the stuff introduced in the first DS installment of Advance Wars I'm not the best equipped to talk since I've only played the DS one.  However, I think their removal has less to do with them being gimmicky and more to do with them being horribly unbalancing.   I mean getting attacked twice in essentially one turn?  How is that not going to reduce things into a contest of who can tag power first?  That being said, I'm gald they're going to get rid of it so I don't have to cringe everytime I see the computer/opponent innitate a tag power.

I love this game and have it so if anyone is up for playing let me know.  Also, if any of you are interested there is a great website where you can play the dual strike CO version online.  If any of you want to play that way let me know.  The site is http://awbw.amarriner.com/.  I look forward to playing with some of you.
